This is what we try to play but we are all 30 or right at it and can't track back, especially in the second half. We probably are around even GD in the first half and -100 in the second.

If we were smart we would play a 3-2-1 and just try to ugly up the game and maybe pip a goal or two and hold on for dear life.

That would be nice.

I play in 2 leagues and what we do is a 3-2-1 but it breaks down as 2 defenders and the central guy plays a bit like a stopper right in front of the 2 backs.

In our case though we have 2 mids that can run and a target player with size up top that can hold the ball as we transition but also has the speed to counter when the oppurtunity arises. Not knowing your team its hard to suggest any particular system.

Thanks everyone for their responses. I think we're going to try a 3-2-1 at first, but it might morph into a 2-1-2-1 over time.

We're not exactly blessed with a ton of speed, but we've got a few guys that are good in possession. I think if we can control the middle of the park, we'll be decent.

A lone forward as a target man with wingbacks providing necessary width sounds like the best plan for us. I also like the idea of the center back stepping up as DM-like stopper.

Again, thanks everyone. You've all given me a lot of strategy to ponder the next few days.

Maybe I'll see you out there, since they've combined all of the brackets this year, instead of having them split up into novice, intermediate, and expert

Yeah, what the heck is up with that? We were just gonna hang out in novice and dominate. Now we've gotta play teams that have ten club players or something like that.

What time slot does your team have?

That's exactly what we were going to do although because of that, novice ends up being harder than the other brackets. And I think my team is playing on Thursdays, but I don't remember what time

We play Thursdays at 6. When the schedules come out, look for Fake Madrid.

And I would agree with you about the stacked novice leagues, now that I think about it...played novice flag football last year, and intermediate was a lot easier this year.

I'll do that for sure. My team is Victorious Secret (I know, I know)

And exactly! Everyone has the same idea and it ends up turning into a bloodbath every game. I just hope the refs at least seem like they're trying this year. They were awful during the spring. And I don't even want to talk about last fall..

Good luck WSE, from my experience its really more about space than what system and whether your team mates know how to play or not.

The only other advice I can give is the team I play on at times gets stretched north to south so you could try avoid that.

Victorious Secret, eh? Your captain (may have been you, I don't know) was signing up two spots in front of me Tuesday. I remember hearing that name.

I've heard the refs have been awful (I wasn't able to play last year). Scares me, because we have a couple of dudes who haven't played competitively before.

I want to play the all-Chinese team that was signing up behind me on Tuesday. That would be interesting.

It wasn't me. But apparently the creepy dude who was standing at the door said that like three different teams had tried to use that name (even though we've had it for a full year now), so who knows.

But yeah the refs just don't care enough to try and call a fair game.

And honestly, that sounds like a lot of fun.

He was SO ANNOYING. Wanted everyone to tell him what their team name was gonna be...and he bashed every single one. Can't stand that guy.

Our conversation:

"What's your team name?"

"Fake Madrid."

(Couple people behind me laugh, saying that it was a good name)

"I've heard that one before. Not very original."

"I know and I don't care."

(I enter the field house triumphant)

Yeah he was pretty annoying.

When I was signing up my fraternity I told him the name and he was like "oh, you're one of them." I about lost my shite when he said that. He was a condescending douche.

just a fun fact, both of those team names are also used every season at UGA. victorious secret is used in about every sport, but Fake Madrid is soccer specific obviously. Manchester Divided is another one i've seen along those lines.

I figured as such.

My original team name idea was "We're Much Better at FIFA", but that was shot down.

I actually like that one a lot. And now that I think about it, one of my friends suggested Faux Madrid last season but it wasn't picked for some reason.

I played on a team this past summer called the price line negotiators, and yes, the guy had shirts printed with william shatner's face on them.

As formation, when I played in high school we ran a 3-2-1. Pretty much the standard, but we would switch to a 2-1-3 if we needed to score. Basically 2 guys to hang back and keep the possession in the attacking third. The one midfielder would hold just above them and distribute to the wings and they would just bang in crosses. I was a 6'4 forward so it worked for us.
