Guardian Piece on the Subject

quote:

"I believe the tactical weight of the away goal has become too important," Arsène Wenger said at a conference in 2008. "Teams get a 0-0 draw at home and they're happy. Instead of having a positive effect it has been pushed too far tactically in the modern game. It has the opposite effect than it was supposed to have at the start. It favours defending well when you play at home."

I've never really enjoyed the rule. This tie was a rare case in which Bayern thoroughly deserved to go through on road goals with the way they performed in the first leg.

I vote against it. Just doesn't make a ton of sense to me, particularly once extra time starts.

I actually agree that the away goals tend to play too much of a factor. I guess it's just a way to keep every second leg from going to extra time.

It's a horseshite rule. I don't know the reasoning behind it, but extra time and pk's is a much more deserving way of sending a team through. I know a lot of people hate pk's, but at least it's an actual soccer skill, more so than an arbitrary rule like away goals. It's so ridiculous that you can be winning a game, tied on aggregate, but losing the series

ETA: Bayern was by far the better team than Arsenal. But not bc they scored more away goals

It's supposed to encourage attacking from the visitors.

If that is the Jonathan Wilson article on the subject, he does a good job explaining why it was a good idea in the past and why it isn't now

I know. I could just see certain managers complaining about having to play extra time more often.

I don't have a problem with it in spite of today's result. I don't like having games decided on PKs.

Then at least go straight to pk's. Even that's fairer than away goals

there is no worse way in all of sports at deciding a winner

How are away goals any more fair? At least pk's require some skill and nerve

Meh, the away goals rule really doesn't bother me.

I do not like the away goals rule at all. Should be the most goals after two evenly weighted matches. If it's a tie, just play extra time.

Yeah, I read that article a while ago and he makes a solid case in terms of the rule now prompting to play more defensively in many cases.

The rule still doesn't bother all that much but perhaps something like away goals only counting after 30 minutes extra time in the 2nd leg would do a little more to minimize it's effect.
