He doesn't even make the top 5 Hungarian stars (hell, he's pushing it for top 10).

Well in one sense we have produced a couple of really good players, but they decided, for one reason or another, that they would rather represent other countries. So statistically we are producing probably at the level you would expect. And we've produced some teenagers that were able to go to Europe early on, and at least graduate from some academies. We've had trouble making the last step.

If we change nothing in our youth structure, then there is the possibility that we will get at least one player on an elite level. Donovan and Dempsey could have been under the right instruction. Bradley could have been had he stayed in Italy and developed there. Players like Kljestan and Feilhaber don't even get looks in our NT but could probably play in Europe. I'd venture to say that we are deeper than most other "average" teams, like Sweden and Turkey for example. They have players closer to the elite level, while we simply have more players to choose from.

Other fringe countries like Australia, Japan, and South Korea have produced at least one player that became recognizable due to the fact they played on winning teams, and all three started leagues in the same 20-25 year window that MLS started. That's what we are missing. It would take one star on a big team to really make a massive impact.

Well with LD he just didn't have the chest to stick around at Leverkusen. Some people forget he was still pretty young when he left.

You jealous of my Russia knowledge?

And btw, 1st vs. 4th in Serie A today was me talking to myself.

Go back to following England and thinking no other leagues exist.

I don't think this sentence has ever been formulated.

I find English football to be a tad bit boring. But nice try!

this is the key, when they are poor and don't have much going for them they will turn to soccer, as an escape and an outlet. that coupled with a good youth system will produce top talent.

we don't have either of those in the US. Sure we have poor people but those kids are pushed into football, basketball or gangs. And in the rare chance someone is good they aren't given the proper training because we feel highschool and college are a mandatory route for athletics

Well put. For Example, an exceptionally talented kid in Brazil isn't learning the game and developing his skills in an academy or playing in tournaments every weekend. He's kicking the ball around with his buddies and learning the game organically. That's where individuality, natural creativity, experimentation comes from. Just trying shite. The most uniquely talented players around the world basically teach themselves how to play. It's not being taught to them. Not saying that the club academies around Europe and South America don't have anything to do with the development of all these great players. Their role is to refine that talent once it's already there. We don't have those players yet or the set up to refine natural world class talent. It's getting better though.

Dempsey was an EPL best XI selection for the 2011-2012 season.

That doesn't mean he was one of the best 11 players in the EPL though. He just had a great year with a mid-tier club. It was an anomaly. Gotta say though, it was fun as hell watching him play that season. He was borderline unplayable some games.

Unrelated here but looking back, Spurs was a bad move for him. And then he moved to MLS a couple years to early.

He was super productive in the EPL and was a player that was pretty underrated. In his last two seasons at Fulham, he scored 36 goals in 88 games, which is extremely productive for a wide midfielder. For his first few years he had to continually earn his spot, but he was the centerpiece of those Fulham teams in his last years.

He was even productive at Tottenham. He just didn't fit into the high press game that AVB wanted to play.
