I imagine Michael Owen is exactly what it would be like listening to Sloth from the Goonies commentate on the sport.

He makes stating the obvious out of style.

I was watching the match tonight on 2DF in German. Most boring thing I've ever heard in German. Give me Sport 1 or Sky Deutschland. Not even one tooorrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!! tonight.

Some of the English play by play and color guys aren't "good" so to speak but I still find many entertaining. . .
getting comments like "it left his foot like an osprey flying from the bush" goes a long way.

As for Americans, I like JP Dellacamera fine.

For Twellman, I don't care if he gets on a soapbox about an issue nor do I think his insight is poor and I never care of I agree or disagree with color guys.

However, I do find his general conversational skills to be quite grating in that he constantly borders on seeming outright rude in both bitchy tone and constant little passive aggressive phrases.

They can really get into it. An English play by play guy will be calling the match with a typical dry, direct, and level English cadence then suddenly SHOUT THE PLAYER'S NAME whenever a shot is made. Some also make random, strange observations.

Yeah, I enjoy that so many of the play by play guys say the most random things ever.

They're so unashamed as well to deploy adjectives that you'd normally expect from a 8 year old girl describing a unicorn cupcake or goth teens their emotions upon first reading Shelley.

Putting these guys next gruff, not-the-sharpest-knife in-the-drawer retired players is a great recipe for subtle unintentional humor.

Shep Messing is garbage.

I'm partial to Brian Dunseth, myself.

And, I'm in the minority - but I love Alexi in the booth.

I love Twellman. And Stu is very very good.

Twellman is good as long as he doesn't get on the soapbox. Alexi Lalas isn't terrible, although I know many here might disagree (since his bravado can get kind of obnoxious, but he tells it like it is), and Stu Holden has grown on me. Even Friedel has been alright, although he likes to make points about the goalkeepers too often.

JP Dellacamra is also very good, and I'm a big fan of Kyle Martino for commentary.

Anyone know the guy who called the Portugal-Germany game on ESPN radio during the 2014 WC? Really enjoyed the games he called.

Agree completely. Both points. Sir Ian/Macca were so good.

A really good tandem in the booth makes a world of difference in terms of my enjoyment level watching a match.

Long live Jack Edwards from WC 2002! Here are his calls of the goals against Portugal: John O'Brien 4', OG (last kicked by Landon Donovan) 29', Brian McBride 37'. I really wish his calls of the Mexico game were on Youtube, but FIFA got them taken down.

He's now the voice of the Boston Bruins, producing awesome calls like this.

My favorite Ian/Macca moment, from the first season of EPL on ESPN.

I can't recall the teams - but I remember the exchange.

Macca: "______ are terrible today, Ian. Absolutely terrible."

:pause:

Ian: "Would you care to elaborate?"

:pause:

Macca: "No, Ian. I wouldn't."

I literally find it hard to enjoy a match sometimes because I can't stop hating him so much. Seriously. I'm baffled at the amount of guys on here that say they like him. The tone and flow of his voice is all wrong for soccer commentary. There's never any chemistry wIth Taylor in the booth. He commentates like he's the only person in there. Sarcasm and subtlety from whomever he's partnering with never really hits because I don't think he listens. Just waiting for his turn to talk really loudly. His response to whatever his partner just said is always something completely random. All of it is just so bad. His way of speaking is so strange to me. I can't pin it down. He's like a 23 year old chick from LA or something. The guy really stresses me out, clearly
