why is it that France, England, Italy, etc. are mandatory into a 6 team pot?

Not necessarily a 6-team pot (they are in different pots), but they must be drawn into a group with 6 teams (Not Group H/I). Long story short, UEFA want their most recognizable teams playing 10 total games, and not 8. Purely about commercial (money) reasons.

Such crap. 5 team groups have a harder time getting the playoff spots. Oh well, sucks for wales.

Have to look at stats, but not sure this is inherently true. Remember, that the matches against teams that finish 6th in their group are not considered for the playoffs.
