Young Americans Turn Against Boomers Over Social Security= Newsweek

quote:

Younger generations in the U.S., including millennials and Gen Zers, are much more likely to believe that the Social Security system needs reforming than those in their 60s and 70s, according to a recent survey conducted by Redfield & Wilton Strategies on behalf of Newsweek.

A majority of 63 percent of Americans "strongly agreed" (28 percent) or "agreed" (35 percent) that the Social Security system needs to be reformed, according to the Redfield & Wilton Strategies/Newsweek poll. Only 10 percent "strongly disagreed" (5 percent) or "disagreed" (another 5 percent).

quote:

Millennials (those aged between 27 and 42), Gen Zers (those aged between 18 and 26), and Gen Xers (those aged between 43 and 58) were more likely than boomers (those older than 59 years old) to think that Social Security should be reformed.

According to the poll, 56 percent of Gen Zers, 76 percent of millennials and 69 percent of Gen Xers believed the system should be reformed, against 50 percent of boomers.

There were also overwhelmingly more millennials (52 percent) thinking that the system isn't getting as many tax payments as it was handing out benefits to retirees than any other generations, including Gen Z (39 percent), Gen X (25 percent) and boomers (39 percent).

That's a giant surprise.

Well in all fairness, the government tried to reform ssn via Covid. They weren’t quite as efficient as desired in killing off the seniors, but they did try.

Doesn't really matter what anyone thinks. Social Security isn't sustainable.

The young Generations will never see a cent they are paying into this system, it’s broke in a few years, and the choices to save the system, at that point will be to print( and watch inflation skyrocket) , or raise taxes even more, and continue to Ponzi scheme can kicking….for only a few more years. Which means anyone in their 20’s and 30’s will never probably see a cent of that money…

Social security is a total fraud on the American people and it always was. It is in no way any type of insurance or guarantee. It is a tax that is dumped directly into the treasury to be spent however the government likes. The idea that there ever was a trust fund is laughable, but even if there was, it’s all gone now. When you pay into social security, you are not pooling with others to cover yourself, in fact, you’re getting way less than you’ve paid into. Take into account inflation since the 30s, and you’re getting criminally ripped off. Never mind that it won’t even be available for my generation and we’re forced to keep paying the tax.

This is not an endorsement of giving aid to Ukraine, but GOD I'm tired of people saying stuff like this.

We've sent $75 billion to Ukraine.

We spend over $1.5 Trillion on Social Security EVERY YEAR.

A trillion is 1,000 times more than a billion.

That means that every year we spend many times more on Social Security than we've spent on Ukraine.

It's literally like carrying a $10,000 a month mortgage and complaining that you're going broke because your wife buys name brand peanut canned groceries instead of the generic grocery store brand.

It so dumb it offends me.

(EDITED for my own dumbassery.)

We'll see.

When I was in high school our government teacher guaranteed us that it would long be insolvent by the time we got there. I'm 53, so it could collapse before I get there yet, but they don't seem to mind continuing to print money to keep it up, so it just depends on how long that can hold up.

They see the signs and the studies that show it’s a scam to them and they’ll never get what they’re paying in

That retirement is a pipe dream to them in that age bracket

Good. Let them modify it for themselves. Don’t touch anyone over 30.

You're right, we spend 1.5 Trillion.

Shows what I know.
