Yes, Colin Kaepernick is hurting NFL ratings
by Daniel Roberts
December 8, 2016

The steady decline in NFL television ratings has been the biggest story of the football season, and arguably the biggest sports-business story of 2016. What is clear is that interest in watching primetime NFL games has waned, but what remains unclear are the exact causes, and which causes have had the largest impact.

Now recent reports suggest that one of the factors dismissed by many has in fact had a definite impact: player protests during the national anthem, led by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Four weeks into the season, the NFL blamed the ratings dip on the “attention around our presidential election, which is unprecedented.” That explanation looked sound by Week 10, when ratings for the first Sunday Night Football game after the election finally rose 13% compared to the year before. The matchup of the New England Patriots vs Seattle Seahawks got the best rating for a Week 10 Sunday night game since 2011.

But the trend did not reverse for good, and the ratings crisis is anything but over . . .

What few of the games I have dropped in on, the word "professional" is a misnomer. Seems to me that if my former business could tell me what decals and license plate logos I could have on my truck while on company property then the NFL commissioner can tell players what they will do during the anthem. What are they going to do otherwise, quit?

I'm not surprised. I wonder how NBA ratings are doing?

I haven't watched one game this year. First time in over forty years. Screw the NFL. They are getting what they deserve.

A player on a 1-11 team isn't hurting the ratings.

I'm not buying it. If ratings didn't dip because of wife-beating and child abuse, why would they dip because of this? I can't be too eager to believe that even the shittiest among us care about our political beliefs THAT much.

The reason that ratings have gone down is because the game has begun to collapse on itself because of an exhaustive rulebook and has become less entertaining. Combine that with a generation of giant quarterback busts—Manziel, Tebow, Russell, Griffin, McCoy, and yes, Kaepernick—the contributions of these six, collectively, aren't 5% of what we expected them to be.

Ratings are down because the product is shite.

It is not the player, it is the nfl stance on what the players have done and continue to be supported, albeit quietly

Said it before and I'll say it again. It's an easy fix, and they're idiots for letting this controversy continue to fester.

Play the anthem while the teams are still in the fricking locker room.

NBA ratings appear to have gone up, which is why I'm not buying the angle in the yahoo article; NBA players are more outspoken, I've found, when it comes to social issues.

Baseball and basketball, as far as quality of play, are both in their best shape in 20 years; football is in its worst. There's your answer.

You mean ratings are down since Manning left the game?

It has been building for years. People have been saying "I watch sports for an escape. For entertainment."

People do not watch sports to have a grinding discussion about politics.

They represent the nfl and impact the nfl, good enough for me and I am not the only one who sees it this way
