This. If there was simply nothing to all of this story, the Trump administration would have proven it by this point in time. Not being forthright has created even greater mistrust in the administration and is going to continue damaging his political capital until all of this has finally been resolved.

Trump has had extensive real estate dealings with former USSR thugs prior to his candidacy. Some think that he was at least a willing partner and enabled these guys to launder money. If there is no evidence of that, then fine. But if it turns out that there is something nefarious about his past dealings, you can be sure that Putin knows all about the individuals involved and other details and could leak this info at some time in the future.
