Pretty racist.

BUT I made sure the total composition of my slaves reflected the population so they were say 20% black and 80% white at the time.

Enlightened approach. Call it Planned Slavehood.

Why? What is the difference in a slaveowner and someone who has an upstairs maid, downstairs maid, Chef, maître d', butler, pool boy, limo driver? Mister French?

Mr. French is not black.

In the past not all slaves were black.

And this...

America’s first slave owner was a black man.

But don't tell anyone, this would ruin Rev. Sharpton, Rev. Jacksons, and the Black Panthers narrative of: con artists of their religion in politics.

Racism isn't necessarily determined by the race of your slaves.
It's by your beliefs.

The 2 can intersect at times, but this does not mean that slavery = racism.

Just as bad would be to suggest that all white slaveholders were cruel, inhumane and acted barbarously towards their slaves

The mere fact that they were slave owners made their actions inhumane.

Those are paid occupations and not at all similar to slavery. Are you ever going to post something that doesn't make you sound like a stupid bitch?

Seriously?

American slavery was explicitly about white supremacy and sovereignty.

If anyone said that, it was ridiculous.

What percent of slaveowners in Louisiana were black?

That was my point. Thus, it deserves no whitewashing of any sort.

Which "complications" are you referring to? The seceding states certainly did not view it as complicated.

actually y'all are wrong.

Under Eric Holder's disparate impact analysis, it would NOT be racist.

Might be immoral for being a slaveowner, but would not be a racist one.

I love the way how people deny the cruelty of the system. Also, many poor people - mostly black - were kept in virtual slavery well into the 1950's.

And?

What an odd comment.

Ace,

On an admittedly amateur level, I have explored the "peculiar institution" of slavery and find myself saddened by how little nuance is allowed for in most discussions. As you said, slavery is immoral, but at least in my reading, the conditions under which slaves were held varied a great deal.

For what it's worth, I strongly recommend "Bullwhip Days," a compilation of narratives recorded from former slaves - obviously quite elderly - in the 1930's. Fascinating.

Virtually 100% of slaves were held against their will under threat of crushing violence - from both citizens and the state. Everything else is but details.

The South shouldn't have been so lazy and should have developed a strong enough work ethic to do their own farm work.

This is probably why white yankee farmers of the Great Plains and Great Lakes/Midwest so easily defeated our ancestors in battle during the Civil War. They all had that German Lutheran work ethic and performed their own labor out of their zeal for the doctrine.

Work ethic is key, and it's something the deep south still struggles to develop today. The institution of slavery and the dependency on slaves is what's responsible for many southern whites' lack of work ethic today.

How many people in the south do you think owned slaves?

Scratch that. Don't even bother. That was a troll.

This is bullshite. For one thing they didn't do it easily for for another they had tremendous advantages jn material and manpower.

As far as slavery goes, doe anybody believe the Africans wouldn't have enslaved Europe if they had happened to be the ones who developed ocean-going ships first? Back in those days the strong abused the weak everywhere. The way African tribes have treated other tribes throughout history doesn't indicate any moral superiority on their part.

Making excuses is for the weak. I guess the American Indians would have won, if not for disease and inferior weapons, amirite?
