Will we ever have a viable 3rd party?

The only times I can think of that a 3rd party candidate had a shot at the presidency was Wallace and Perot...and those chances were slim.
Given the fact that the dems are clearly moving further to the left and the GOP seems to be moving slightly more to the right, it seems like the perfect time for a 3rd party to step up and fill that void. Can it realistically happen?

We have it. The constitution party!

If Trump sides wiith GOPe, he might create one.

We will more likely go from 2 straight 4 for than to 3. I see both major parties splitting in my life time.

they already have. The middle ground which has more dems is the libertarians. The other side is constitution.

The libertarians haven't shown that they can be viable.

None of the third parties we have had or have now are viable to actually win an election. Last time we had one that was viable was 1912 when Teddy Roosevelt ran under the Progressive Party banner and came in second.

I'd like it to be that way, but I dont think it would happen. The D and R parties are just too large. They may shift their platforms a little to help base numbers, but even then its still just two parties slugging it out with each other.

For all intents and purposes Trump IS a third party , and you see how he's being attacked by the status quo.

not as long as the electoral college still exists.

Wouldn't need a third party if the GOP would stop being retarded and embrace the libertarians.

But that' won't ever happen. The very states that would lose any power would have to vote for it to happen.

If one got powerful enough it would be corrupted inside two election cycles

Good name, I also like the "Patriots Party" but the NE Patriots would probably sue.

No. They always attract the Jill Stein, Ralph Naders, Ross Perots, Gary Johnsons, etc. Who once they open their mouth, you realize why they have no traction within an organized party
Plus, you look at a Jesse Ventura as Minn guv, and you see no one working with him, and waiting for him to get beat

Not until we eliminate the First Pass The Poll election system. It always, in time will devolve into a 2 party system.
There is an excellent series of youtube videos which explain the issue (link below)

I'm not advocating for it's elimination,
was stating that the electoral college keeps us firmly entrenched in a two party system.

I don't think the electoral college itself does.
I DO think that rules governing the way government money is given to candidates is.
I voted for Gary Johnson in last November's election. Not because I was under any illusion (or delusion) that he could win, or even because I thought he would be a good President (and he would not have) but because I was hoping he would get the 5% that would qualify his party for matching funds in the next election.
THAT is what keeps the two parties in power, and what will keep them there.
Think about this, it took $1B for Trump to beat probably the worst candidate in the history of Presidential elections , now imagine if he had ran as an independent rather than a Republican, it probably would have cost him $2B to win. Sure , he COULD have spent that money out of his own pocket, but that's not realistically going to happen.
So, we've placed the two parties in charge of the very system that decides who can and can not run for office. So no, there will never be a third party of any note.

Doubtful. The EC is set up to favor two parties. You'd have to have a third party that draws equally from both the R's and the D's in order to be viable, otherwise you wind up with one party winning the Presidency every four years while the 3rd party draws from the loser.

We dont have a viable first and second party. They both suck
