Seems like Reagan was all about CIA, and Iran Contra.

the book, bush-family of secrets. it says bush had an agreement with nixon that if he won the 1970 senate race against lloyd bentsen, that he would be the vp in 1972. bush lost. bush was doing all he could to get to the white house. i wonder how involved bush was in watergate? i think ford sent him to china after he became prez to get him out of town.

Bush Sr was the establishment GOP’s choice for candidate, and Reagan pulled the rug out from under them. So they shoehorned their guy into 2nd place.

Crazy to think but all those connections and he somehow got outfoxed by a hick governor from Arkansas who couldn’t keep his dick in his pants in combination with the fact the he was too lazy to campaign until it was too late.

One consideration was that Bush was an 18 y.o. Navy Air Pilot who served in WWII. That contrasted with Reagan's background as a Hollywood actor.

The reality....... probably money and access to the East Coast moneyed interests. Reagan was a West Coast guy who did not run in the same circles and because Nixon had fricked up so many in the NY Boston corridor were hesitant if not suspicious of a former actor who had been running California whose main advisors tended to be Westerners. There was a lot of regional suspicion and discrimination back then. They remembered Golwater in 64 and they were not thrilled with West Coast conservatives. Nixon was different because the knew him and he was not Goldwater in any way. He served the East Coast Country Club Republican interests as did Jerry Ford.

Reagan reached out to Bush and Bush was the connector. For that Bush got a spot on the ticket.

It was a money thing but Reagan still controlled most of the appointments to the cabinet except for DOD and Treasury

I still hate the GOP and the Dems for what they did to Adm. Stockdale.

It was a time similar to today. The country club republicans were offended at an actor becoming president. So when Reagan won the nomination, they threatened to withhold financial support unless he caved on Bush

Bush was one of them

I would love to know the story on Reagan selection of William Casey for cia director. He has an interesting career and total spook and deep state.

He did not get outfoxed by Clinton. Clinton was the guy Bush needed to follow him. Perot was there to make sure it happened as well.
