It's pretty clear we are all paying a decent bit into something that will never be available for us. Why does it seem that is a-ok to most everyone?
Well it is political suicide to even mention it.
The dems do not care because they are pro-money for everybody for any reason.
The Republicans are scared of the "killing grandma" horse shite if they say anything about it.
It is all on FDR and that a-hole has a monument in DC

Its hard to take young people seriously when they correctly complain about exploding deficits while simultaneously politically supporting or PUSHING nearly every new spending idea the left can dream up.
This probably wouldn't be so difficult for you if you didn't view "young people" as a political monolith.

Exit polls had 37% of the 18-29 demographic voting for Trump. Considering the populist social conservative PC slaying platform he ran on is about as tailor made as possible to drive away young voters, that's a fairly sizable number. If Republicans had run someone like Rand, I imagine that number would be quite a few points higher. I know that would have been sufficient to change my vote from Libertarian to GOP.

People just need to accept it as any other tax and move on. The whole system is stupid, and a person should be able to opt out of this so called "govt retirement plan". I don't like paying that extra amount, but I just can't foresee how it will be changed.

Do note that Federal employees, especially members of Congress who vote on such laws, do not have SS deducted from their checks. They have their own, hell of a lot better, retirement program.Health plan as well.

Mostly this on my end too. We are operating like it will not exist if/when we retire.

quote:i think maybe you are bad at math. The tax bracket that most would consider middle class runs from $37k to $91k, and it's 25%. if you made $37k you'd be paying a little over $9k in federal income taxes. Im in the next bracket up, but by no means wealthy.

Huh?
25% is the marginal rate. If you have $37k of taxable income, you pay $3500 in federal taxes. To pay $30k in federal income, you need at least $140k in taxable income.

Because it come straight out of the paycheck and people don't miss what they never had.
And that's only the people who work. The other half aren't upset about social security because they are living off of it.

OP's statement is false.
its not pretty clear that you won't collect.
the formula has been changed in the past. all you have to do is change the formula to map to the population demographics.
for example, the rich pay little or nothing into the system. Know why? Because the rich, who run the Senate (nearly all millionaires) say, if you won't be taking out any, you don't have to put any in. rich people do not get their income from a pay check. so they are not taxed at all for socialist security.
Suppose instead, you tax the social security tax upon all income of every kind.
boom. no longer any issue about you getting your due. there would be excess.

I would be really surprised if SS dries up before other social programs. SS probably can't support the payouts as its designed right now, but it can be fixed relatively easily.
My guess is that SS will last as long as our republic does.

Because the Democrats proposed using the budget surplus to pay for the increased costs of Social Security and Medicare in the 2000 elections, but Bush won, and turned the surplus into a massive deficit within his first 100 days. Since then we know we are farked.

It's a fundamentally asinine program. The worst possible thing you could do is dump more money into it.
