Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued an emergency declaration after the Edenville Dam and Sanford dams failed in Midland County, forcing thousands of residents to immediately evacuate their homes on Tuesday.

Downtown Midland could be under 9 feet of water by Wednesday morning, Gov. Whitmer said during a press conference on Tuesday night following the two collapses. A flash flood emergency is in effect for the areas downstream, which includes Midland City and Freeland, Michigan.

The Edenville Dam is located about 30 miles inland from the Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron. Over 80,000 people live in Midland County.

And before everyone starts blaming Trump for this:

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission revoked the license for the Edenville Dam in central Michigan — which breached Tuesday — in 2018 because of concerns that the dams would not be able to withstand heavy flooding.

I wonder if they will be required to remain at home so the CoviD doesn't get them.

"See...shelter in place orders prevent CoviD deaths!"

Oh look, something that government could actually be useful for, maintaining critical infrastructure.

Oh, look. Govt failed again.

They'll be required to wear masks while being rescued and only 3 people are allowed per rescue vessel

The FERC revoked the company’s license to operate the Edenville Dam in September 2018. The order says that Boyce Hydro failed to address deficiencies in the dam spillway for the 14 years in which it had the license:

quote:

FERC concluded that “revoking the license will leave the community and state agencies increased authority to deal with Boyce Hydro’s noncompliance.” Oversight of the dam falls under the responsibility of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, though local county governments also have significant responsibility for inland dams.

Which level of government should be blamed? Or should the company be blamed?

Should be both, right? The company failed to do their part, and the government agency charged with ensuring the company did their park failed.

Michigan State government is to blame. It’s their damn dam.

The government is ultimately responsible. If your contractor causes you to fail at your job, who is responsible? Ineptitude and no oversight to the vendor

I’m attempting (and failing) at being a smartass.

The dam has seen better days and all the issues that are popping up right now are ones noted years ago that never got fixed.

Gov. Half-Whitmer will probably levy fines on those who left their homes.

I predict that US mass media will blame Trump for this dam failure.
