When I was about 6 years old I threw a fit in the middle of Woolworth's over something I wanted.

She wore my arse out in front of God and everybody.

I never used the "tantrum in public" tactic again.

Paying attention is giving in, unless you immediately quell the tantrum. If you look, stop, think, stop and then act, you've actually reinforced the behavior.
