Democrats in the 80's and 90's where much more blue collar than they are today. They had an intellectual group and they were not as far left. They did not become as leftist as they are today until the Baby boomer generation took over. They are much more leftist than ever in the 90s. Also, there has been an erosion in their ability to argue their points because they are brainwashed in college.

While all this is mostly true, they were still nasty as hell toward Reagan.

They were similar to what they are now as far as social and fiscal policies and what-not. The big difference was there wasn't all of this race-baiting and SJW stuff back then.

They were more like Jim Webb.

Bernie Sanders would have been a national laughingstock except to the very left fringe. He would have been the 80's version of Jill Stein. No way he even sniffs presidential nomination back then.

In the 80's, the Democrats were still obsessed with appeasing the Soviet Union, instead of Radical Islam.

The cultural shift into political correctness

This was the beginning of the end. Politics has no ability to solve social problems unless both sides are able to talk to each other in a real, authentic manner with an open mind. The Democrats were more like this back then. Tip O'Neil and Reagan used to have dinner and drinks with each other in the evening as they compromised and had mutual give and take. The system was functioning and not gridlocked like you see today. The lunatic fringe has taken over the reins of the Democratic Party and has laid it bare as to what they believe and who they really are.

I'm currently attending college, and we have some of the looniest lefties in the state of Mississippi here. It's been an eye-opening experience for me, and helped me solidify my decision to vote for Trump. The intolerance from the left sickens me at times.

As it should. One should be able to disagree on points but find points of compromise with the other side. If you cannot, then you are to far to one side or the other.

Well that's because they have become more concerned about social issues than serious issues. If you notice, Trump never let them go full bore on the social issues this election because he kept them off balance with all the other stuff coming out of his mouth.

And by God, it worked.

Growing up, I don't recall the chasm between reps and dems being that large.

I feel like it's grown exponentially as I've gotten older. But that may be because I was a kid.

I also think some of the same stuff may have been going on, but the 80's and 90's were free of social media, therefore every tom, dick and harry couldn't constantly share their crazy political opinions.

This x1000. I've tried to debate a few issues with some left-leaning friends, but they just revert to talking points and the use of racist, sexist, bigot etc....

I know. I was there. Check out the history of the left leaders in the Washington elite. Start with the Clintons. You may look at Soros as a major player. He is from a different country and a world destroyer.
