What made California blue?

This map is fascinating (sorry if Germans)...
Election Map since 1700's
From 1968 until Bill Clinton was elected in '92, California voted REPUBLICAN! That blows my mind! What was it that caused California to go from consistently voting Republican for 24 years, to being bat-sh*t, nut-wagon, Cucksville Liberal?

California’s Latino and Asian populations boomed in the 1990s and the growing segment of voters were turned off by the Republican Party’s hard-line stance on immigration. After the party closely tied itself to Proposition 187, a controversial California ballot measure that denied public services to people in the country illegally, Republicans struggled to win back the state's immigrant population. Democratic candidates have won decisively in every election since 1992 by performing well in the most populous areas. Despite failing to win the presidency, Hillary Clinton won a higher percentage of votes than any candidate since Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Population Density. When that many people live in a small space, things like property and individual rights give way to notions of "we're in this together". There are more complex issues at hand, but I believe this is at its core when you boil it down to its simplest factor.
When you get into surburban and rural California, there are a lot of conservatives.

What made Cali blue was Reagan granting amnesty to a few million illegals and in return getting fricked on securing the border. With a stroke of a pen, the balance in the state was flipped. That's why any republican that goes along with giving amnesty to 20 or 30 million illegals currently in this country should be run out of town. As soon as that happens, you can kiss Texas and Georgia and a few other places good bye.

I will take a stab at it, even though I am not from California. So, take this with a grain of salt.
You could point to many things Hollywood, Tech Boom, huge agriculture state etc.
But, I believe that the passing of Proposition 187 in 1994 was the main catalyst. That to me sealed the republicans fate and tied their "politics" to the bill. Gray Davis (Dem) ran his entire campaign off opposing the proposition. This hurt Repubs in California for a lot of reasons, mainly (IMO) because the growing population of residents that identified as Hispanic.

Actually, California in he post war period up until 1992 was one of the most reliably Republican states in the country. They voted for Eisenhower twice, Nixon three times, Reagan twice HW Bush one and Ford once and prior to the Depression it was a very reliable Republican state.
The problem came in 1992 with Clinton running and Perot running. The vote got all split up and then coupled with demographic changes started to change the voting habits. But the real problem came right after when Pete Wilson, the Republican governor of the state backed Prop 187 which basically had California cutting off access to drivers licenses, public schools and other services to illegal aliens. That alienated a lot of Hispanic voters in the state who were up until then fairly split down the middle which gave the advantage to Republicans.
187 actually passed statewide in California by a 60-40 spread....but the libs kept filing lawsuits and restraining orders, etc. and by 1999 the demographics had changed and the PR against the Orange County Republicans had succeeded in making Republicans a very distinct minority electorally.

Damn are you saying Immigration has cost us a State that wants to withdraw from the Union.

While that may have played a part, amnesty added several million new potential voters into the mix, and over time that number has just continued to grow. No state population can endure that in a relatively short period of time and expect their voting demographics to remain the same. It was a self inflicted wound the Republican Party will never overcome in Cali.

Yeah, just like a certain election back in the mid 1800s caused some states to actually secede. Most of which were solidly Democrat.
Oh, but those states dont count on this board.
There is no problem with a DEM state going GOP or vice versa. If demographics change and 'more likely' cultural influences change, then a switch might be in the best of the state (not necessarily the best interest of a party).
