And what is all the hoopla about removing and re-locating the statue of him?

OK, so Lee was one of the focal points of the lost cause of the Confederacy. And New Orleans, being a prominent city at the time, was part of the movement. The lost cause of the confederacy of course had to do with the notion that Southern secession had more to do with states rights and aggression by the north than slavery. I think we all know slavery played a big part. But Robert E Lee never set foot in New Orleans .

Instead of removing the statue of him at Lee circle, I think it would be fine to erect some kind of monument or very large plaque stating that Robert E Lee and the Confederates were soundly defeated in the civil war, eventually leading to the abolition of slavery, so forth and so on.

I think it's pretty common knowledge that the South lost the Civil War. Why contribute to the stupidity of others? Maybe not spelling things out for people would lead to them opening a book every now and then?

Or was everything i typed too many characters to fit on a twitter post?

Lee helped defend the South from harsher punishments after the war, ran corrupt Republicans out of the South, and fought for the rights of blacks to vote and be educated. And he was also opposed to secession. Sounds like a good guy.

The people who made New Orleans into a great city before progressivism made it into a 3rd world shithole in parts cared enough about him to erect the statue.
Now the progressives who only seek to destroy are having their way for awhile.

They should put up statues of Moon and Morial with a plaque stating that under their leadership, New Orleans went from a national economic powerhouse to a regional tourist city.

soundly defeated

Depends on what your interpretation of soundly is. Numbers of killed, wounded, captured and lost for the South was 490,309. The numbers for the North was 596,670.

So soundly defeated is in the eyes of the reader. The South ran out of money. I think that was their biggest enemy.

A mayor that has fallen out of favor spent hundreds of thousands of tax dollars to pander to black voters.

Yep. It went from being the equivalent of Houston/Atlanta to the equivalent of Charleston/Savannah in about a generation. Now we're trying to make sure it no longer even has any of the southern charm of those two.

Welcome to modern day progressive anywhere.

Well I think a lot of people respected Lee and used him as a model southern post-war. He wasn't a man who got into the fight to advance/defend the institution of slavery, but instead he was who got into the fight solely to defend his state. He believed that secession was illegal and there were only two ways to leave the union based on the constitution, revolution and through a convention where all parties decide to dissolve the union. Once Virginia left the union, Lee decided the only thing he could do to defend them was to become a revolutionist.

He is a much better person to honor and teach your children about than say Nathan Bedford Forrest who was highly successful in the war but was a pretty evil person. I believe that is why Lee became such a central figure from the south post war and why people honor him to this day. He was everything right about the south, when there was plenty of wrong to go around.

It is funny how Morial and Nagin never said a peep about them. But Mitch, almost certainly jockeying for a post-Mayoral employment gig in the Dem apparatus, makes it his cause du jour. It probably wouldn't even be as bad if there was even a 2% chance that he was genuine in his desire to remove them and not playing identity politics.

Mitch is obviously angling for some leadership role in a Dem lobbying group or something similar. He wouldn't win office in Louisiana again.

It may have played a part, but it didn't play a big part until the Emancipation Proclamation. In fact, many Northern soldiers said they considered leaving the fight because they were no wanting to fight for and possibly die for the freeing of the slaves. Lincoln turned the focal point of the war to be slavery, and it almost cost him dearly.

I also don't think people ascribe to the belief that it was due to Northern aggression. That is just a running joke about calling the war the War of Northern Aggression.

What the frick is Simon Bolivar's relation to New Orleans?

By the same logic they are using, they should go after the statue of that leftist icon but I won;t hold my breath.

You just don't give up do you... you got spirit kid, I'll give you that.

Maybe they should take down all of the Thomas Jefferson statues all over the country, he might have been one of the founding fathers, but that SOB owned slaves. And let's be real, he probably assumed genders as well, what a pig.

Statues are built to commemorate important people or events. Lee represented a southern gentleman that stood up for southern ideals at the time, whether they were right or wrong. Let's not delude ourselves or yourself into thinking we started slavery. Slavery has been around as long as man and continues today. Oh, a fun fact, you know where slavery takes place the most currently, Africa. You know the place that sold them to us.

So continue along with your fairly land tales of socialism and no gender assuming. Bad things have happened throughout human history. Memorializing people that stand up for a half a country full of people and their way of life seems fitting.
