HAVANA (AP) — The Cuban government hailed President Barack Obama's decision ending automatic legal residency for any Cuban who touches U.S. soil, while ordinary citizens mourned the end of an easy pathway to a new life in the United States. Average Cubans and opponents of the island's communist leaders said they expected pressure for reform to increase with the elimination of a mechanism that siphoned off the island's most dissatisfied citizens and turned them into sources of remittances supporting relatives who remained on the island. The repeal of the "wet foot, dry foot" policy went into effect immediately after a Thursday afternoon announcement. It followed months of negotiations focused in part on getting Cuba to agree to take back people who had arrived in the U.S.

He's being a childish, petulant a-hole. Why now when everything about his presidency, save for the color of his skin, is going to be wiped from the history books?

Sound awfully similar to deportation.

I'm fine with the policy but suspect his motives for it were less than pure.

Cuba didn't export enough socialists and communists as expected. The plan didn't work the way our socialist democrats envisioned, thus the plan was terminated. IMO

This action had a specific purpose. It's a purely political move.

When this is undone dems will use it to claim unfairness to other groups.

The timing is also intentional.

It's sickening. It will be Cubans against other Latino nationals. I'll be in Miami next week. I'll see how they feel.

Obama's a dirty motherfricker. I don't see how anyone could support his actions at this point.

Petty shite like this is how Trump got elected. People are tired of identity politics and just want some sense of decorum.

Exactly. I don't care where they are coming from, people shouldn't be swimming over here and be granted residency as soon as they arrive.

lol at the people pretending that Cubans love the GOP and vote conservative. 58% of Cubans voted for Trump. They were, by a large margin, mostly older Cubans over the age of 40. The younger Cubans are asshats looking for gibsmedat and destroying Miami-Dade County.

How would a Cuban legally immigrate here?

You silly. They go to their local immigration office or US Embassy there in Cuba and request to immigrate to the United States! It's that simple!

On one hand, I don't like one group recieving benefits all others don't, especially on something as big as citizenship. Something something "government picking winners and losers."

On the other hand, I knew quite a few Cubans from when I lived in Florida and there's no doubt escaping Cuba and gaining US citizenship saved a lot of lives...

While I agree with the change in policy, this is all about Obama trying to sure up his legacy in his later days. He sees himself as normalizing relations with Iran and now he's trying to do the same thing Cuba and knows that liberal historians will record it as such. Never mind that he's giving credence to a state sponsor of terrorism and a Communist dictatorship that has a long history of oppressing its people.

Like the majority of Obama's presidency its impotent.
Step one, Florida declares itself a sanctuary state for freedom seeking Cubans.
Step two, on January 21, Trump reverses the policy with a stoke of the pen.
