He didn't say anything wrong. Trump could say "It's a nice day today," and CNN would say he was racist because nighttime is black and he didn't say "It's a nice night tonight."

Trump is an American who is also entitled to his own opinion. That being said, as President of the US, he could have used language that would not have been so divisive. He could have said something like: "I don't agree with what the players are doing, but they are Americans and have the right to do what they are doing." Something along those lines would have made him look a lot better than calling people "sons of bitches." You can have a disagreeing opinion and not put people on blast like an a-hole.
