Were the members of The Band closet white supremacists?

How dare they write and perform a song that is sympathetic to the plight of Confederates.

Like my father before me, I will work the land
Like my brother above me, who took a rebel stand
He was just eighteen, proud and brave, but a Yankee laid him in his grave
I swear by the mud below my feet,
You can't raise a Caine back up when he's in defeat

"My Father's Gun" by Elton John is another example of a fine song that could be labeled as such.

Leftist extremism is a big problem.

They can ban the statues
They can ban the first amendment
They can erase history

But if they go after my boy Levon, they will have a fight on their hands.

Telling a story with a song is not endorsing the Confederacy.

Christ you are dumb.

They originally wanted to be called the honkies or the "crackers" but their label objected

... well they did have the Flag of Northern Virginia hanging in their studio as seen in the Last Waltz. I believe it was right before Neil Diamond did 'Dry Your Eyes'

Sparky, I never wrote it was an endorsement of the Confederacy. I wrote that it was sympathetic to the plight of Confederates. Ask your wife's boyfriend to read it to you again.

Rick Danko wasn't real wild about the song. If you watch the Last Waltz, you can see him pouting through the performance.

Helm was always adamant that it was never about the glory of the Confederacy or any other such bullshite. It was about the common man whose life was hit hard by the war.

But, stupid people will never understand that, and their puppet masters are just working their way to the Founders, so it's just a transition for them.
