"We will write our own bill" - GOP Senate Chairman of Health

The narrowly passed House measure can’t get anywhere near the 51 votes needed as is, even though Republican senators insist they’re united on delivering on their seven-year vow to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Instead, they want to write their own bill.
Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, who chairs the Senate health committee, Rob Portman of Ohio, and Roy Blunt of Missouri, a member of GOP leadership, described the plan even as the House was celebrating passing its repeal after weeks of back-and-forth.
“We’ll write our own bill,” Alexander said in an interview, although he said senators would consider pieces of the House bill. “Where they’ve solved problems we agree with, that makes it a lot easier for us.”
quote:
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said that while changes to the legislation insisted on by members of the House Freedom Caucus improved the legislation, he’s still not satisfied.
“I really frankly am not too excited about subsidizing the profit of insurance companies,” said Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. “There’s about $300 or $400 billion in this bill for insurance company profit,” he added. “It boggles my mind how that became a Republican idea.”
The Senate has been slowly working on its own plan, said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who is part of a 12-member working group developing the proposal.
“What we have to do is build a consensus among our conference and that is what the working group is designed to do,” Cornyn said.
“It was kind of a moot issue if the House wasn’t going to be able to pass a bill, and now they have and I’m proud of them for doing it,” Cornyn said. “Now it’s up to us to pass a bill 51 senators can agree to.”

Republicans pulling the same meaningless legislation tactics they pulled during the Obama admisistartion.
Remember, they had no problems repealing Obamacare 50x because they knew it would be vetoed. So they just kept scoring political points off that "We need the presidency to finally get rid of Obamacare"
Now they have all 3 branches of govt and suddenly theres problems?

This is insane. How any republican could defend this bill is incredible. If only values and principles meant anything in this country. Thank god we at least have Rand.

Love the guy but he can't be this naive.

We wouldn't have half the leftist's programs that we have to live by now, would we?

So you are all good with the subsidies for private companies coming from taxpayers?

He's not saying it boggles his mind as if he can't understand why, but as a statement of indignation for the supposed values of the party.

Amen. Alexander is the real deal.

You're making assumptions and accusations of nothing I ever said. I responded to the part of your quote. My quote nothing to do with healthcare, just things in general pertaining to principles and values. You made your post sound like you have now just become concerned about principle and values. I went way back in making my statement.
Hope it's clearer for you now.

I have often wondered how the elite who rule this nation and most of the western world allowed Trump to ever have a chance at the presidency.
I now understand why, and why it isn't a big deal whatsoever to any of them:
Trump can't get any meaningful law passed to help us, and his EO can be overturned with the pen just as he did Obama's once he is out of office.
All these trade deals he got us out of will be right back on the table as soon as he leaves and order will be re-established. They have the house and senate and even the SCOTUS because I believe when push comes to shove all Justices (see Justice Roberts the ultra conservative before he put a knife in our back) will do as the elite wish.
It felt good though to see the country tell them with our vote that we are willing to do anything for drastic change. If Trump doesn't work, we will move to other means.

A Republican idea? Sure. A conservative idea? No. They are not the same.
The only defense of the bill is "it is better than before and the best we can do". The simple truth is that there are significant number of Republicans that are not conservative and there are no Democrats that are conservative so to expect a conservative bill is wishful thinking.
It's even more pronounced because all of the GOP Leadership in both Houses are pretty moderate. There isn't a single member of the Freedom Caucus in the House Leadership or Chairing a significant committee. Joe Barton is probably the most powerful as Chair Emetrius of Energy. The Senate is even worse. The strong conservatives have no power at all really when you are talking about Paul, Cruz, Lee, and Sasse. All of the "big guns" are old guys that are completely entrenched in DC and obsessed with their own power. Cornyn is probably the most conservative and that's pathetic because he is a sellout joke.
At least when Newt took power in '94 he had some real conservatives in Leadership in the House with Armey, Archer, etc. Now the moderates rule and they spend their time and resources fighting off conservatives who may oppose them either in Congress or especially in primaries.

A total complete fake. It's sickening to watch and listen to him.
