Trump/McCain aren't the problem. The problem is deep within each of us. Humans are deeply flawed. They are incapable of perfection and fall far short of the standard of excellence that is our greatest potential.
Therefore all leaders are bound to disappoint us. They are flawed and selfish and blinded by their own ambition.

That verse is not about our potential. We [Christians] wage spiritual war. But this has nothing to do with politics. That same Bible and same apostle says that all authority--including our politicians--were given that place by God. Christ is our perfection and in him it is already realized. We simply wait with faith for his return or our own physical death. Until then we do the good works he has given us. Share the gospel and help the weak and helpless.
