Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) said it would create about 10,000 jobs in the United States this year, about the same as in previous years, as President-elect Donald Trump puts pressure on companies to hire more U.S. workers

Have to keep up with Amazon.

i for one am so happy there was a brick & mortar store the size of walmart to give the new online-retailer a run for its money.

do you think we'd be better off if we just trusted amazon to keep prices low without any competition?

Sure it is. If 10,000 people choose to work at wal mart, they are likely moving up or possibly laterally, rather than down.

Was Mart seems to be having more success than others bricks and mortar stores in embracing e-commerce. They are looking at undermining Amazon these days as much as they are Sears or Target.

Any job is a good job when you don't have a job. Walmart is a decent place to work to start building a resume or if you aspire to get into retail management.

You won't become Bill Gates but you won't starve either.

Trump is to the economy as Reagan was to the Iranian hostage takers.

Which equals to no extra checkout lanes being open.

Great. You closet welfare queens can now get a jobs and still receive welfare checks, maybe. Thanks Trump!

Did you hear that Wells Fargo is closing 400 branches?

Of course you didn't. Those jobs require an education other than a semester from community college.

Amazon announced a massive expansion and people claim that bricks and mortar retailers are dying.

Then Wal Mart is now basically saying "frick You, we are adding just as many jobs to expand in the US."

Why is this something we that we're using as evidence of trump's effectiveness? The very quote the OP provided clearly states that these added jobs are
quote:

about the same as in previous years
So a couple of points:

1) I'm not diminishing all of the positive jobs reports we've been hearing - Trump is clearly doing something to make US investments more appealing

2) This OP, however, does not provide any supporting evidence of point 1. It states outright that Wal Mart's anticipated job creation is simply business as usual

3) Trump's a master at media outreach. He is great at getting the right spin on a story to have it reflect favorably for him (and hopefully for America). The fact that so many people automatically assign a business as usual decision as one of Trump's successes is a strong example of this media mastery

4) The most important thing the president can do for an economy is provide confidence. I hope we can use trump's expertise in disseminating a message to put a lot of people back to work. There is already some evidence to indicate that this is happening, and that's awesome

5) But I don't think we should be willfully blind to reality. When we get a jobs report that clearly states that businesses are going to continue doing exactly what they've done in the past, we don't need to trick ourselves into believing that it's an improvement bestowed upon us by the god-emporer. Let's try to apply a little bit of doubt where appropriate so that we might continually develop a marginally better picture of reality over time

Note: this isn't necessarily directed to the OP itself, but more towards this board's tendency to over-value some of the announcements we've seen recently.
