Legislation to decriminalize polygamy in Utah moved closer to becoming law on Feb. 10 when a Senate committee unanimously passed it and sent it along to the full Senate for debate.  Currently, polygamy is a felony in Utah punishable by up to five years in prison. Under the new proposal, SB 102, the current law would be amended to reclassify polygamy as an "infraction." The punishment for an infraction is similar to a hefty parking ticket; there is no jail "We want to encourage more reporting and easier investigation of abuse, and the way to do that, after consulting with prosecutors and polygamists alike, is to reduce the criminal penalty so the high barrier to community integration is lowered," she said.

Angela Kelly, director of the Sound Choices Coalition, which fights against polygamy and its abuse of women, said SB 102 would only make the situation worse. “To bring it down to an infraction, you’re essentially saying this is an okay lifestyle,” she testified before the Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee. “And it might be for 10 people, but we’re talking about society as a whole.” Kelly became interested in the polygamy issue because of her upbringing in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), the Mormon church.

Not really surprised by this

Hey, the left is ok with the freak show parade, so they can't be upset with this either.

How is polygamy "abuse of women"?

20 or so years ago some feminist admitted that if you were in favor of homosexual "marriage", you could not logically oppose polygamy.

Even though polygamy exploits women, she didn't care that it would be legitimized. The only thing that mattered to her was "destroying the patriarchy" and traditional marriage.

How can you logically be for same sex marriage and transgenders and not be for this?

Being honest here. I've never supported laws that prevent consenting adults from behaving how they wish in relationships.

NOTE: This does not mean I "support" polygamy. It simply means I do not support banning it.

Ever watch any of those reality shows? The women almost always hate the arrangement. The men go from bed to bed every night and the wives want the husband all to themselves. It’s what you’d expect.

This was inevitable. Once gay marriage was made legal nationwide the rest of the folks who want their interpretation of marriage recognized were bound to demand equal rights.

Look for the push to lower the age of consent for sexual relations....you don’t think beastiality is not on the horizon? The Prog/Dim party is the Slippery Slope party.

Exactly, but many have trouble grasping the distinction.

Like clockwork, we will soon be seeing the posts about minor children being forced into polygamous marriages ... from people who not understand that they are combining two completely-severable issues.

Read it.

You will never look at Mormons the same way again as just teetotaling do-gooders.

Why you would want more than one wife boggled my mind.

One is enough to make me tear my hair out.

I am only because of the history of mainstream LDS and how Utah got into the Union.

Utah wanted in but due to the then-LDS position on polygamy it was denied.

Then the LDS President had a "revelation from God" (they believe in that, just like some charismatics today) that polygamy was no longer permitted. Voila, they change their views and get admitted into the Union.

(They did a similar thing with blacks in the 1970's: after Bob Jones University lost its tax exempt status due to its racial policies, BYU was the next target due to their beliefs that blacks, being the "cursed race of Ham", could not be evangelized. But like polygamy, another "revelation from God" and the exemption was safe.)

And yet, you felt the need to express that opinion.

There's an old story that Mark Twain and a Mormon were debating this topic. The Mormon told Twain to give him one Bible verse disallowing polygamy; Twain replied "no man can serve two masters".
