U.S. President Barack Obama and other world leaders have decided to end Russia's role in the group of leading industrialized nations, the White House said Monday.
The move to suspend Russia's membership in the G8 is the latest direct response from major countries allied against Russia's annexation of Crimea.
"International law prohibits the acquisition of part or all of another state's territory through coercion or force," the statement said. "To do so violates the principles upon which the international system is built. We condemn the illegal referendum held in Crimea in violation of Ukraine's constitution.

Ehh...nothing hurts in the short term. Ask Putin's cronies how these sanctions feel in 6 months.

This is the kind of stuff they should have started with. Don't threaten military actions or intervention.
I'm glad to see they quit talking and are now acting.
Now let's see how Putin responds.

Russians play chess. Americans play poker. Putin has planned several moves ahead, but he doesn't know what we hold or how we'll play it. He may miscalculate.

Good. Glad the other members of the G8 had the balls to take action. Sort of surprised China isn't a member but considering the current circumstances it's easy to see why; would be just another mess like the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council.

Irrelevant.
This move is just for show.
Russia has been aligned with the BRIC's for some time. Russia, China, India, and Brazil represent the BRIC's and some project these economies to eclipse the G7's in the near future.

The only thing (other than American/NATO troops being sent to Ukraine) that has half a chance of getting Putin to reverse or come to the table would be for Obama to put the missile defense system back in Poland and NATO begins military drills in the area. Other than that this is going to a LONG time. The US can hurt Russia by sanctions, asset freezes, etc and increased export of NG to europe but we are talking 2-5 years.

Putin will FINALLY lose veto power in the UN security council, as well.
Russia's status will weaken in the long- term.

This is such bullshite...Putin had the Ukraine blow up in his face and has tried to save said face with an invasion and the result is he has further alienated Russia from the world...so what is Putin winning but for a crime ridden, ethnically volatile peninsula?

I agree he had Ukraine in his back pocket until the protests started.

Well Crimea is the home of the Russian Black sea fleet and the only Russian port that doesn't freeze.

Yeah, the honey badger don't care either...but he's a professional athlete, not a world leader.
He's going to lead his country right down the toilet for no good reason...Of course all the Putin fellators will be impressed with how he's "pwning Obama"

Thank you for something of actual relevance to the thread with a bit of substance.
Bric alignment? Palin? Putin DGIF?
We shall see how it all plays out. I don't see Russia ever giving up the Crimea because of its strategic importance. I also don't see Russia ever checkmating the USA with BRIC, sure they are populous, and..... and?
I would love to see Russia's role in the UN diminished. Doubtful though. China DGIF.
If we were serious, we would impact flow of Russian Oil and Gas through the pipelines that are basically indefensible. It may yet come to that. Maybe we could blame the Ukrainians, but that would give him the pretext he needs to expand his conquest even further.
Interesting times!
