U.S. Manufacturing Contracts for First Time in Three Years

quote:

The Institute for Supply Management’s index fell to 49.7, worse than the most-pessimistic forecast in a Bloomberg News survey, from 53.5 in May, the Tempe, Arizona-based group’s report showed today. Figures less than 50 signal contraction. Measures of orders, production and export demand dropped to three-year lows.

Very surprising this hasn't gotten more play on this board today. This is perhaps the most damning economic datapoint yet.

Alabama's doing our part to help the dismal numbers.

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley on Monday joined with Airbus executives, economic development leaders, and other officials in formally announcing that Airbus has chosen Alabama as the site of its first U.S.-based production facility.

The facility at the Brookley Aeroplex in Mobile will be used to assemble the industry-leading family of A319, A320, and A321 aircraft. The entire project represents a $600 million total investment and is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs within the production facility when it reaches full capacity. In addition, the construction phase of the project is expected to create nearly 3,200 construction-related jobs over a three-year period.

Significant economic hard news and analysis is usually sorely lacking on this board. Good threads on the economy are usually hijacked by the 10th post. The ISM numbers released today were completely unexpected by the experts, and that is an even bigger story than the numbers themselves. It's not just the first contraction number in 3 years, the size of the month-to-month variance is more than double the next highest variance in the past 12 months. The average for the last 12 months is 52.6 .

Also, little attention has been paid to the failing relationship between the PMI and GDP so far this year. The average PMI in the 1st quarter was 53.3, which should be synonymous with a 4+% GDP growth, as opposed to the 1.9% we actually got. So that makes today's figure potentially more disturbing.

Before someone says let's wait for the revised PMI number for June, there won't be one.

Not surprising.

Nowhere to export it to (other than China.... and that's a one-way street, apparently) + not rapid enough growth of the US economy to consume it here.

That's because most lack the knowledge (but can't admit it) to have a rational discussion, so they fall back to party talking points.

You mention the disconnect between the PMI and GDP growth... It's one of many disconnects in the economy. I feel that the last ten years and the next ten years will be rewriting Econ textbooks long into the future. Things aren't working like they're "supposed" to.

China's datapoints indicate a softening as well and likely downward revisions to GDP.

As with Europe's.

It seemed like all the news out of Europe would have had a larger affect on our economic outlook, but seemed like people were ignoring it for some reason. But it was inevitable that it would catch up to us, too. I guess most people never worry about the approaching storm until it's on our doorstep.

I remember that Airbus, had it won the tanker contract, was going to build it in Mobile.

Sounds like they really like the area so Mobile wins anyway!

That's why I said...... no where for any manufacturing output to go, really. I'm really curious to see if Europe is the next shoe to drop, or if China beats them to the punch.

I'm (probably) moving from the public sector to the private sector over the next 6-12 months, so if you see the other shoe drop, you'll know I got hired the day before.

This is the mindset that brought us from the country that we were, to the the country that we are: " Those are just scare tactics, those things will never happen!".
