Baltimore leaders have celebrated signs that the city appeared to have stopped hemorrhaging residents — and might even be gaining people.

But new federal estimates show the city population falling to near a 100-year low.

Baltimore's population fell by more than 6,700 people in the 12 months that ended July 2016, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Thursday, as the number of people leaving the city for other parts of the United States doubled.

The decline wiped out the city's meager gains under Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, who sought to draw 10,000 families to the city. And the loss came as the city grapples with rising crime, a homicide spike, a school budget gap and the fallout from the death of Freddie Gray.

"That's a big loss," he said. "This is deeply problematic."

The figures put Baltimore at about 614,664 people, down more than 1 percent. It's now returned to about the same size it was a century ago.

The decline occurred amid modest growth statewide and regionally.

Not black leadership. Dem leadership.

I can't blame anyone with the means to leave for getting out.

I am surely not going to move my family to Baltimore or any other similar city.

What gets left in Baltimore are those who can't leave and also can't pay taxes.

There's Dem leadership in places like Austin, Nashville, Denver, Houston, Boston, etc. Not many places do well under Baltimore esque leadership.

Baton Rouge isn't exactly tearing it up either.

1970 165,921 8.9%
1980 220,394 32.8%
1990 219,531 -0.4%
2000 227,818 3.8%
2010 229,493 0.7%
Est. 2015 228,590 [36] -0.4%

We are trending down again, and we've only picked up around 8,200 new people since 1980. The Katrina "boom" in population is a myth.

They growth is in unincorporated Baton Rouge and in suburbs around Baton Rouge. The nicer spots in BR are either full or too expensive.

One of two things are going to happen, a lot of the empty or blighted areas will be rejuvenated, or the parish will start losing citizens once the blight encroaches on the older, so-called good neighborhoods.

Right now there are some infill projects going on, and some older, good neighborhoods are being reenergized, but there are also areas losing the battle.

Politics, events, and even the weather may decide which way it goes in the end.
