Spain's Conde says U.S.’s contribution to NATO budget should be double &
Deputy defense minister blames Trump for NATO divisions

The U.S. should be paying about 50 percent of the NATO budget, they pay 24 percent,” Conde, 51, said in an interview in Madrid. “It’s not right to say that European countries owe money.”

Interesting that the countries that are always on the front lines: Estonia, Poland, Great Britain, and the US are the only ones contributing more than 2%.

per the article, there is a "budget" (that's really small, like $2.5B) and the actual overlays (that are huge, and where we pay 70%+)

They give us the ability to project power and us and the Brits are pretty much the gate keepers to the Mediterranean.

While most NATO allies’ contributions to its 2.2 billion-euro ($2.5 billion) annual budget are based on their economic output, the U.S.’s payments are capped with the agreement of all members. NATO’s own budget is just a fraction of the alliance’s overall outlay on defense, most of which comes from national governments. The U.S. accounts for some 70 percent of NATO’s total military outlay while 23 of the 28 members fall short of the alliance’s target of spending 2 percent of gross domestic product on defense. A NATO spokesman declined to comment on Conde’s remarks.

Well we can always leave Rota for Souda, and leave Moron for Sigonella, I dont believe Senior Hombre would like those hundreds of millions of US Dollars going to Greece and Italy.

Spain has an unemployment rate hovering at 20%, needed a bailout in 2012 from its European friends and has been in financial chaos since 2007. They should be lucky not to be booted from NATO. It's high time we told Western Europe to frick off and take care of its own defense and security.
