Update: MSNB Host Issues Apology for Military Dead not "Heroes"

LINK

quote:

Chris Hayes: I'm 'Uncomfortable' Calling Fallen Military 'Heroes'

quote:

Hayes is worried that doing so is "rhetorically proximate" to justifications for more war. Oh, the rhetorical proximity! View the video after the jump.

These people never cease to amaze me. On a day for remembering the dead, he wants to say, "Hey everyone look at me, I am so above you."

Apology Link

quote:

"On Sunday, in discussing the uses of the word 'hero' to describe those members of the armed forces who have given their lives, I don't think I lived up to the standards of rigor, respect and empathy for those affected by the issues we discuss that I've set for myself," Hayes says in a written statement. "I am deeply sorry for that."

Now that he has his name discussed for the last 24 hours, he can now have a change of heart. I guess he got what he wanted.

He'd call Ted Kennedy a hero, though

if you know it's only going to offend people, why say it? Stupidity?

I am not comfortable all who die in the military hero's. Not all are hero's, some are even criminals. But no reason to point out such a fact on memorial day weekend, other than on td board.

Well to be fair, the "People" would be his viewers and since those are few and fare between, I am guessing he didn't care if he might only offend 12 or so people.

They're still risking their lives for the country, so why discredit hundreds of thousands because some of them "may" be bad apples? If that were the case we wouldn't support anything.

No, but saying something that you know will create a shite storm on Memorial Day weekend to self promote does amaze me.

Well, if that's how he feels, then he can say it. No reason to be politically correct all the time, even on holiday weekends.

Didn't know anyone here stated he "Couldn't" say it! Think the op was pointing out the fact that he did.

Seems to me like the OP is suggesting that he shouldn't say it on Memorial Day weekend because it will cause an uproar.

Are you implying that I can not be amazed by something someone says?

You can be amazed at whatever you want. I just don't know why the idea would be so amazing.

Hey buddy...if somebody gets killed serving in the military, it's pretty obvious that they obeyed orders that put them in harms way. When you sign on that line and take that pledge to defend this nation and comply with those orders...that pretty much makes one a hero in my view.

No doubt that there are degrees of heroism, though.
