I don't have a lot of sympathy for Otto, but I would never go so far as saying he got what he deserved.
He truly was a dumbass for going to NK in the first place.
Even more so, for attempting to steal a political poster from there.
None of that excuses the brutal treatment he received at the hands of NK

I've repeatedly said that what happened to him was a result of the stupidity of going and the completely foreseeable circumstance that NK does dumb assed shite.

It's probably a good idea to stay away from the border too. Those two female journalists WJC rescued, and the detainees in Iran, were both likely kidnapped in cross-border raids into China and Iraq. You also don't want to be on a beach in western Japan. NK has kidnapped several people from there.
