More liberal fascism.

You either support free speech or you don't.

quote:

The University of Chicago is known as ground zero for the fight to defend free speech in academia — but tell that to the vast majority of professors in its Divinity School.

Most of its faculty have signed on to a letter condemning its online publication, Sightings, for publishing a piece by University of Chicago history professor Rachel Fulton Brown that defended Milo Yiannopoulos and highlights the fact that “the tradition of higher education in America is deeply indebted to Christian ideals.”

Fulton Brown, a Christian conservative and staunch defender of Milo, cited in her controversial piece a talk he gave that delved into “a commitment to education as one of the most important things Christianity gets right.”

Newsflash 99% of schools are against "free" speech. As for your argument would you have an issue with someone yelling fire in a theater or making threats against public officials or racists remarks?

We have over 200 years of history in America as to what we mean, and what we don't mean, by free speech. I was hoping we could start the discussion a bit further along than this.

This was intended to save lives by preventing a stampede

making threats against public officials

This actually applies to all citizens, but again threats of physical harm should be investigated.

quote:

racists remarks

An unpopular position, but I think this should be completely allowed as long as it is not paired with any type of physical threat. Calling someone a name, no matter how foul, only hurts feelings. It also announces to everyone with earshot that the speaker is an ignorant, racist asshat. They should not be subject to government censorship. They should be aware that using that language could have negative consequences from public opinion, and (if the offended person is willing to suffer the consequences of an arrest) a punch to the face.

More liberal fascism.
Ironically, UChicago is one of the good guys in this debate. It made headlines last year for warning incoming Frosh there would be no "trigger warnings" or "safe spaces" at UC.

I don't think that qualification was included in the Constitution. But yea, there are potential consequences.

Intent to cause immediate harm isn't allowed
quote:

or making threats against public officials

Happens all the time on college campuses and isn't illegal
quote:

or racists remarks

Not illegal and happens all the time on college campuses but is only allowed when disparaging white people

Boy anybody who equates yelling fire in a theater to what the left is doing on campus has descended into the ninth circle of stupid.

they weren't when i was in undergrad 15-ish years ago

especially the liberals/Democrats (which i was). they were the defenders of free speech

fire in a theater has no relevance and neither do threats of physical harm

racism is whatever. people are free to be racists and i hope they publicly embarrass themselves by admitting it to everyone

Your understanding of the First Amendment's Freedom of Speech is woefully limited.

Two of these are not like the other. Go take a short First Amendment primer and get back to me. And then I'll shoot down your stupid rebuttal about Chicago being private.
