President Trump's proposed budget would cut entirely the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities (NEA), according to a new report by The New York Times. Federal officials told The Times that the chairwoman of the arts endowment told her staff the news Wednesday. It was reportedly met with a mix of sadness and surprise.

That's very predictable. I mean do you see him or any of his Trumpkins having any appreciation whatsoever for the arts? The arts is as foreign to them as Nascar is to gays.

It does seem like an unnecessary part of government, but I really wish somebody would come on and make every single governmental department, organization, and operation cut some percentage of their costs across the board--including defense and the entitlement organizations (the ones who are often untouchable).

It's all bloated, so let's make everbody trim it first.

What, they'll have to earn it for themselves? We can't have any of this.

Let me be clear on this, zero endowments.

Next up?

My wife was a professional Cecchetti Ballerina. I have been to Broadway to see more production than you have fingers kid.

The problem with liberalism is that it sees only government as a source for good. Thus, if someone wants to cut government funding for something, that must mean they hate it. The National Endowment for the Arts does some great work, as does NPR and PBS, and they deserve to be supported. However, they don't need the government to survive. Their works stand for themselves, and their donors will ensure that they keep operating. There is literally zero reason for the federal government to be funding them.

It will never pass. NEA and things like pbs are massive tax write offs for corporations.

Just another trump lie.

I wanted to read a little more of what the NEA was all about.

LINK

quote:

“[F]ar from being an interruption, a distraction, in the life of a nation,” Kennedy said of the arts, “it is very close to the center of a nation’s purpose — and is a test of the quality of a nation’s civilization.”

quote:

It was President Lyndon Johnson who signed the law creating the National Endowment for the Arts, saying, “Art is a nation’s most precious heritage. For it is in our works of art that we reveal to ourselves, and to others, the inner vision which guides us as a nation. And where there is no vision, the people perish.”

quote:

Arts and culture contribute more than $700 billion to the national economy and employ nearly 5 million people.

It seems like the budget for the NEA is only around $148M, which isn't much in comparison to the overall budget. And obviously, cutting this program will have a big impact on kids in the low end of the economic ladder.

Pre-2015 I always thought Trump was some pretentious douche who was genius at marketing his brand. I had no idea he was white trash.

He should redirect every penny of that to youth arts education. Puts the Democrats in the position of opposing art and music programs for kids.

$148 million. That's enough to pay about an hours interest on the national debt.

Why can't art support itself in the private sector without taking my money via force of government?

So, in you opinion, where do you draw the line between what should be funded by the federal government and what shouldn't?
