President Trump will ask Congress for $1.5 billion this year to begin work on the wall he promised to build at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The money is part of a $30 billion supplemental spending request that's being sent to lawmakers on Thursday, according to White House budget director Mick Mulvaney.

The request could trigger a fierce partisan showdown over the controversial wall proposal, as well as Trump's broader efforts to crack down on illegal immigration.

Why can't we have both?

Just make art on the wall.

Border security is a core responsibility of government.

building an insanely expensive wall doesn't make our borders any more "secure"... having people patrol the border does...

the most secure border in the world is between N and S Korea... do they have a humongous wall along their border? frick no... they have armed, trained military personnel walking that fricker every single minute of every single day...

wanna spend money to secure the border, fine... just spend it more wisely.... we don't need a literal wall...

Why not have both? And if you want to know what a wall will do for border security, just ask the Israelis.

There are secure fences, a live mine field and a tank wall just south of the DMZ.

Hmmm, seems like a core responsibility of the government.. Heck, I'll throw a $100 bill their way if need be.

How do we make that revenue neutral? Also Trump already called for the increase in ICE and Border Patrol agents.

a large majority of the DMZ is just fence, with razor wire on top, and of course the mine field....

the tank wall does not run the entire length...

because we don't need both... we don't need to waste money on a fricking wall and the false sense of security that it would bring....

wanna stop people from crossing illegally? hire more agents and/or put active duty military personnel there to patrol the border 24/7/365...

Is that more cost effective in the long run?

100% most definitely it is. Technology and more agents will be MUCH more cost effective than a symbolic wall which people can boat around that costs loads to build and even more to maintain over the years.

Concrete would not need much maintenance, it's low cost once in place. Furthermore, a "symbolic" wall coupled with technology would be safer and cheaper in the long term than funding 10s of thousands of boarder agents.

It is absolutely asinine that people believe paying boarder agents is more cost effective. Hell, even if the 20,000 or so only cost taxpayers 30k each per year, that's over half a billion a year, and that's not even considering collateral costs.

Physical barriers are effective in slowing incoming objects/people. Couple it with motion sensors, border crossings fall to an almost non-existing number.

The issue i have is "cost effective" the cost maybe lowe, but i dont believe it's going to be effective in the least.

I don't disagree the cost for more agents is more costly over a long period of time, but i dont think it's more cost effective.

except it is not "insanely expensive" (where did you find that horse shite?) and having the wall makes the people doing the enforcement way more effective
