The White House did not respond to questions on the tax credit proposal or its status by deadline. Details of how the Trump administration might structure the plan remain unknown. But sources close to the discussions who were not authorized to speak publicly say the program might be capped at a level as high as $20 billion, and resemble legislation first introduced by Republicans Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Rep. Todd Rokita of Indiana in 2013, called the Educational Opportunities Act.

That bill, which has never passed either chamber, would have created a federal tax credit of up to $4,500 for individuals and up to $100,000 for corporations that make donations to nonprofit “scholarship-granting organizations,” or SGOs. Those organizations would award the funds to low-income students, who could use the money to attend private schools, including those run by religious groups.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos praised the bill in 2015 when it was reintroduced and she was chair of the school choice advocacy group, American Federation for Children.

“There’s no single domestic issue more pressing than fixing our nation’s antiquated education system and the Educational Opportunities Act will empower parents throughout the country to have access to quality educational options that are otherwise out of reach,” she said.

If the federal government is going to have their hand in education at all this is the correct way to go about it. Marco realized this back in 2013 and took a couple sabot rounds for his forward thinking. Now the Trump administration is using his 2013 plan as the model going forward. Marco 20/20. Vision. Foresight. Growth.

Doesn't this go against the purpose of private schools?

No there are not supposed to keep the "poors" out. They are supposed to provide an environment that fosters learning and teaches values. "Poors" children are as capable as any to do so if given the chance.

I appreciate the idea. My children attend a very good private, Catholic school in Las Colinas and that school could take in several "poors" and actually give them the best shot of becoming useful citizens.

though sounding good on paper, dont think it will work in reality.

1) Just like the ease of getting student loans, the cost of private tuition will rise as supply rises.

2) as stated above, the purpose some us e private schools for is to "escape" the public school system, so these schools will just increase tuition higher then the "scolorships" pay

3) this will kill the weaker private schools. Look what happens to apartment complexes, the new ones fill up and charge market rates, as the complex get older and are surrounded by newer ones, they start taking section 8 tenants to fill up vacancies, then the complex takes a nose dive. Same will happen to weaker private schools, as they take the "section 8" scholarships, the schools will see flight, and the schools will be forced to take for of these scholarships....

Eh, it's not so much about distancing yourself from the lower class as it is wanting to offer your children an education quality that surpasses what your local public schools offer.

Areas with solid public schools will have few, if any private schools I would imagine, since parents are satisfied that their children are receiving a quality education via the public option.
