At a Thursday press conference at BSO headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Israel stated that sheriff’s deputy Scott Peterson, who was on duty at Stoneman-Douglas at the time of the incident, took cover instead of engaging Nikolas Cruz, the person suspected of carrying out the attack. “He was armed, he was in uniform,” Israel said, but citing witness statements and video footage, “what I saw was a deputy arrived at the west side if building 12, take up a position, and he never went in.” Israel suspended Peterson without pay pending an investigation however the deputy chose to “resign/retire” instead of being suspended. Israel says the investigation into Peterson’s actions will continue.
Sheriff Israel also revealed BSO deputies had responded to calls involving Cruz 23 times since 2008. The deputies involved in that incident are also under investigation by the department.

The amendments are powerful motivation. I would expect people to receive death threats if they tried to remove or weaken any of them.
