Curious at this smart groups thoughts on HOAs. Ive lived in three HOA communities and while I haven’t had any major issues, ive had minor issues in all three.

A friend of mine has shared a horror story about an HOA that is making decisions that are directly impacting his property. They make no sense. It’s almost like they are having a “how do we mess with him this month” item on the agenda.

No greater warning of the dangers of authoritarian rule exists than the neighborhood HOA.

You have a friend. And he has a horror story. And HOA is to blame.

Got it.

I realized as I was typing that the actual story is boring. It’s about drainage and slopes and stuff. He complained about something and the HOA has taken out a vendetta against him it seems.

HOA’s are the worst thing ever to happen to housing developments

I'm a VP/Treasurer of a Property Owners Association. We have a small but good group of homeowners. But I can see where you get the wrong people in leadership positions they can harass the heck out of homeowners. And there is always a resident who takes great pleasure in pointing out where others are doing wrong. We've had a bit of that over the years. As an officer of the POA, we have to try to enforce the Restrictions when there are legitimate complaints. It ain't always fun.

There was a bill last year that passed the Mississippi House that would give HOAs taxing authority like a municipality.

It failed the senate.

My issues have been really minor. A check going to an old property management company who cashed it instead of returning it or forwarding it to new company took more effort than it needed to because of incompetence.

Tell your friend to get a great lawyer.

I live in an upscale gated community south of Atlanta. I've been in this community for years without any problems from the HOA until someone complained about my front yard 20' flag pole. I believe they had a problem with me flying both the Stars and Stripes and the Marine Corps colors.

Long story short, had to threaten them with a law suit and television exposure to reach an agreement. I'm "allowed" to fly the colors on holidays. I have a signed agreement written by my attorney stating such. The important part of the agreement is that they didn't specify which holidays.

You would be surprised at how many "holidays" there are if you research them. They now just pretty much leave me alone!!!!

Most HOAs are glorified trailer parks. If you're going to own a house, be able to do what you want 247.

I’m pretty sure you don’t understand the purpose of a homeowners association. I’m guessing here but I think it’s to keep it from looking like a trailer park.

Guess you dont understand "glorified". I completely understand what a HOA is, I have also lived in them. Most of the residents are renters or trashy owners. There are some communities that have rules or covenants as well which I would consider more classy.

One of the HOAs I lived in, I had a neighbor drive his truck into my garage and then get attacked by cop dogs. It was out in the country, still had trashy people.

I’m sorry… I’m pretty sure we’re still not on the same page. I’ve never actually had to sign a waiver to be on an episode of Cops.

I had two leaning willow oaks.

The arborist tree cowboy told me I had three more that were going to take out my neighbors dock and pool.

He cut all five down as I approved.

Hoa fined me $1000 per unapproved tree. It took me three weeks to get the lazy hoa frick out of his house to approve.

They Sent me $3000 bill

Took pics with hoa girls feet in the pics.

We went to lawyer and he said it would be cheaper to pay than fight. But then on the way out he suggested we call police for trespassing since girl was on property.

We asked for girls name that took pics so we could call police.

Hoa reduces fine to $150 per tree.

We pay.

Don’t really like HOAs but in my neighborhood it’s had some purpose. What is it with people who’ll spend $300K on a home and proceed to junk the frick out of it? Parking vehicles in the yard, bags of leaves from last fall all around the side of the house, bushes growing over the windows.... you get the picture.

HOAs should be considered unconstitutional. No neighborhood should dictate how one uses or alters their property.

Are you sure? Lol! I bet there’s some homes I could show you that you’d be pissed if they were your neighbors and you were trying to sell your home.
