All of these people resigning got letters last week stating "Thank you for your service."

It's not some protest. It's the White House kicking out the old crew which is far from unprecedented.

Yeah, some of these guys worked their way up the ladder through different administrations - but once you hit that senior level, your head goes on the chopping block with any change in the presidency.

The only thing really unprecedented about the whole deal is they don't have replacements lined up, but Tillerson will have his own crew in there soon.

Whether Kennedy left on his own volition or was pushed out by the incoming Trump team is a matter of dispute inside the department. Just days before he resigned, Kennedy was taking on more responsibility inside the department and working closely with the transition. His departure was a surprise to other State Department officials who were working with him.

One senior State Department official who responded to my requests for comment said that all the officials had previously submitted their letters of resignation, as was required for all positions that are appointed by the president and that require confirmation by the Senate, known as PAS positions.
“No officer accepts a PAS position with the expectation that it is unlimited. And all officers understand that the President may choose to replace them at any time,”
this official said. “These officers have served admirably and well. Their departure offers a moment to consider their accomplishments and thank them for their service. These are the patterns and rhythms of the career service.”

Much ado about nothing.

ETA: we are talking about 4 or 5 people here, right?

He probably knows that the senior staff who are resigning are the most qualified people for the job. This isn't hard.

You guys are so delusional right now. It's like you're all on an extended coke bender.

W's primary mistake was in not draining the mufricking swamp that is State. If they want to pull their own plug, I'm in favor.

Resigning is actually retiring, whatever makes it look more dramatic.

Civil service dregs resigning on their own?

It's worth repeating.

Good, now they have to get a real job. Good luck with that.

Remember back when all the Air Traffic Controller went on strike nation-wide? Reagan fired them all.

It's four people! I think they (State Dept.) can manage until they're replaced.

As I was saying, it's not some mass protest. They were all asked to resign.

No one gets "fired" at the top level. Just told to resign. This is a total non-story.

State Dept's "most qualified"? Do you not recall all the screw ups, especially under Hillary's run, that these most qualified employees were either involved in or directed themselves? The State Dept. is one of the most political Federal Agencies in D.C. so if they have been in place for a long time, they are political as hell. Think working under Hillary & what that means.
