What about Southern Whites would convince Hitler that they were a super race or headed toward super race status?
Just curious....why do you assume this was a "southern thing"? Did you know that most states (even California) had laws against interracial relations until 1948?

According to the article, most of the eugenics work going on in the U.S. at the time was going on in California. Maybe it was southern Cal?

Andrew Weikarts book, "From Darwin to Hitler", postulates that Hitlers race theories come from none other than Darwin.
"Darwinism by itself did not produce the Holocaust, but without Darwinism, especially in its social Darwinist and eugenics permutations, neither Hitler nor his Nazi followers would have had the necessary scientific underpinnings to convince themselves and their collaborators that one of the world's greatest atrocities was really morally praiseworthy. Darwinism - or at least some naturalistic interpretation of Darwinism - succeeded in turning morality on its head." - Weikart

I've always held the belief that Darwin's teaching led to atrocities like this an abortion. Margaret Sanger was also influenced greatly by Darwin. It's hard to say that man is merely a highly evolved animal with no unique qualities like a soul and not reach this end. Survival of the fittest can only devolve this way.

It wasn't just about blacks, Hitler saw Barbarossa as the Germanic equivalent of Manifest Destiny and the 'displacement' of the indigenous Americans equivalent to his 'displacement' of the Slavs.
The American Indian Wars were just wrapping up at Hitler's birth. Geronimo surrendered in 1886, Hitler was born in 1889. Oklahoma was Indian Territory up until statehood in 1907.
