Very close.
Actual translation was at a funeral and he was trying to say:
"Where is my father? I need help tying this tie."
Oh my goodness
No disrespect to the dead intended.
I remember talking to a foreign translator one day in what I presumed was common English, he stared at me for about a solid minute and said " I am sorry, I only speak in English and Arabic" I got a chuckle out of that and reminded myself to ramp up the deep south redneck accent every time I spoke to him. After 6 months of so this guy was fluent in run-on sentence and half word English.

The only remaining question is why did Coke not anticipate people being confused. Am I the only one who didn't "get it"?
Maybe you are just up in your own head or something. It really wasn't very complex.

Similarly, the Superbowl is an event that is watched world-wide.
Not so much, but even if true, I believe the commercials aren't always shown in the other countries.

Your grandfather was embellishing the truth. Kids in the 50s in So. La. were discouraged from speaking French. They weren't whipped.
oh hey everyone here is zach who since he was old knows the practices of every school in the state at any point in time.
Also my grandfather didn't go to school in the 50, he went to school in the 30's and 40's although i am sure he learned english by the 40's

The problem is that today with all of the different media using different languages, it makes it harder to assimilate.
And if you can't assimilate, it's harder to succeed. It also can balkanize a nation, and blur the lines of national identity.
This has happened in Belgium, where the French and Flemish speakers have had a mini cold war going on for more than a hundred years.
Ronald Reagan used to say that America is the only place you can immigrate to, and "become" a citizen. One of the most important tools in accomplishing this is language.
And of course, Coke would have to go all PC by choosing one of the nation's most beloved patriotic songs.
