Thank God for Harry Reid (by Charles Krauthammer)

There are many people to thank for the coming accession of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Donald Trump for winning the election. Hillary Clinton for losing it. Mitch McConnell for holding open the high court seat through 2016, resolute and immovable against furious (and hypocritical) opposition from Democrats and media. And, of course, Harry Reid.
God bless Harry Reid. It’s because of him that Gorsuch is guaranteed elevation to the court. In 2013, as Senate majority leader, Reid blew up the joint. He abolished the filibuster for federal appointments both executive (such as Cabinet) and judicial, for all district and circuit court judgeships (excluding only the Supreme Court). Thus unencumbered, the Democratic-controlled Senate packed the lower courts with Obama nominees.
Reid was warned that the day would come when Republicans would be in the majority and would exploit the new rules to equal and opposite effect. That day is here.
The result is striking. Trump’s Cabinet appointments are essentially unstoppable because Republicans need only 51 votes and they have 52. They have no need to reach 60, the number required to overcome a filibuster. Democrats are powerless to stop anyone on their own.
And equally powerless to stop Gorsuch. But isn’t the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees still standing? Yes, but if the Democrats dare try it, everyone knows that Majority Leader McConnell will do exactly what Reid did and invoke the nuclear option — filibuster abolition — for the Supreme Court, too.

I really want to avoid this at all costs and make sure we can get 8 democrat votes.
I'm scared as shite if we nuke the filibuster for the Supreme Court, the democrats will overturn that by packing the court to 13-15 justices if they get power back anytime soon.

What's stopping them from doing it anyway?

They could never do it.
The political backlash would be unfathomable.

I share that concern also - what I'd like to see is a constitutional amendment that sets rational modes of appointment and confirmation of Federal justices as well as fixing their number.
I'd also like to see a 2/3 requirement for a decision. If the object is to determine the constitutionality of some court case - then it ought to be crystal clear one way or the other. If you cannot get 6 of the 9 justices to agree that it is constitutional then it probably isn't. Or at least establish an even number of justices so you'd have to get a 2 vote margin to make a decision. I truly hate 5/4 decisions.

the nation is too divided for super majorities anymore
The left has thrown hissy fits over the popular vote in 2 elections. No way they will ever settle for the Republicans requiring 60 votes when the Dims are back in charge
Might as well get used to the new normal

They'll do it anyway. They'll just nuke the filibuster themselves. Congress needs to pass a permanent law about this subject, IMO, so the rule can't be changed when a party controls Congress. Same thing with EOs. I would like strict guidelines on when/how they can be used.

worrying about tomorrow at the expense of today is why Trump got elected and not some GOP elitist that's always worried about the next election. If the rules are good for one party then they're good for both, if the people want to elect dems and stack the court, then so be it, that's freedom. Until then the cucks need to manthefrickup and do what is necessary

The only way to rein all of this in is a Convention of the States. At some point, it needs to happen or we will become the next USSR!
I believe Cali will b the first over the next 8 year

This is false. There will not be any political backlash over anything the Dems do until the republicans throw it back on them. This is a fact. The fake news MSM and the democrat talking points are too coordinated to allow it.
