The Republican Party Executive Committee of Terrebonne Parish voted at a special meeting Monday, October 22, to not support the ½% Sales and Use Tax proposed by the Sheriff, because the in-perpetuity tax will bring the overall sales tax to 10.45% -- the highest in the nation. “We believe that a higher sales tax in Terrebonne is neither consumer nor business friendly, and will ultimately hurt an already ailing economy,” said Wallace Ellender III, Chairman of the Committee. “Although we fully support the safety of our school children,” he added “we believe another way must be found to provide security in our schools other than a tax increase.” There are a total of 36 Public Schools in Terrebonne Parish, eight of which currently have School Resource Officers, and the Sheriff is promoting the tax to put Resource Officers in each public and private school in the Parish. “First, we don’t believe it’s the taxpayer’s responsibility to fund private schools or the staff they hire,” said Ellender, “so we based our calculations of the impact the tax will have by placing SROs only in public schools, the amount the Sheriff’s Website says a starting Deputy earns, and the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government’s financial audit Report.” Based on the need of 28 more SROs earning approximately $50,000 each per year, plus approximately $9,000 for Sheriff provided insurance, equipment, and vehicle, the cost to the Sheriff for these new Deputies will be approximately $1.625 million per year. According to the TPCG audit report the ½% tax would bring in $10.5 million to the Sheriff’s Office – or a surplus of $8.87 million of undesignated funds per year. “This tax was sprung on the people of Terrebonne Parish in just the past two weeks,” explained Ellender, “and the Committee believes more public input and discussion is needed before we strap ourselves with the highest combined state and local Sales & Use tax in the country.”

Wow. This really opened my eyes on this issue. All I see are billboards to vote for it.

That is not the highest in the nation, Farmerville is higher than that and has really hurt local businesses.

I wont support any new taxes.

Sounds like they took the deputies salaries and multiplied it by the number of needed deputies then took the cost of insurance and equipment per deputy and multiplied it by the same number and got the annual cost to staff a deputy in every school.

I’m hoping the same sentiment is felt in LO with Ard and his ridiculous tax proposal.

Yay Terrebonne. Way to say no to more taxes! Looks like Larpenter is going to have to actually manage funds and do some work.

He going to make sure those cuts are very visible and give the appearance that this is hurting the community.

But I bet you that his super expensive shiny mobile command center and all the sheriff’s offices other toys still burn up plenty of fuel riding in the parades.

How ironic was it that most of the parish received their property tax bill in the mail the same day that you ask them to vote on a new tax.

“Really bad timing”

This is exactly what he will do. There about 10 positions on the road open. Where was he going yo find 45, qualified, fully trained Sro's? This tax was in perpetuity so they would be taking a lot of money in. Legalize marijuana and pay for an SRO for every school in the whole state

Glad this political money grab attempt didn’t pass - from day one it was slop covered in gift wrapping.

Of course everyone wants kids to be protected in the schools but what they don’t tell you is Terrebonne Parish is already short handed on the road and in the jail with officers. These officers would have to complete the academy and work for 2 years (that’s if you can find them) before being put in the schools with no guarantee of improved child safety. Oh and there’s the few stories of previous “officers” (one of which had sex with a 15yo girl while at school).

Even most of the sheriff’s employees didn’t agree with this proposal. Especially in an area that is still recovering from the oil field lows a few years back.

He also made it out to seem this money would result in them having to cut meals on wheels and cleaning/maintenance for schools. What’s not said is that the top meals on wheels employees are not paid via taxes and they use inmates to complete all labor and cleaning. Not too expensive! There’s also a few employees in charge of the work that’s not costing much.

A sad attempt by a sheriff to use heartfelt topics to persuade the public on voting for an unnecessary tax increase.
