People who read the news are more likely to feel angry towards Muslims, a new study has found.

Whether liberal or conservative, researchers found more avid news consumers showed both increased anger and reduced warmth towards members of the Islamic faith.

The findings, based on responses from 16,584 New Zealanders from the New Zealand Attitudes and Values Study (NZAVS), were published in leading international science journal PLOS ONE.

People who are more in tune with events more likely to dislike Islam

I would be interested to see how this works with other things that are labeled prejudiced.

I imagine more well-informed folks are opposed to Islam than are hardcore about deporting illegal immigrants, for example.

So what this study is actually saying is that people who learn more about Islam are more scared of Muslims than those that don't learn about Islam.

Not to split hairs, but the portion quoted says we're less warm toward Islam.

No reasonable person should be particularly scared of Muslims. But I think it's totally rational for well-informed people to be wary of what Islam stands for and what the expansion of Islam can mean for western values.

I agree with all this nuance. When I said "scared" I was just channeling my inner Aspergers.

There's no such thing as islamophobic. If I hate the KKK I'm not KKK phobic. I just recognized a shitty belief system when I see it. If I hate Nazis I'm not a Nazi phobic. I just recognize that shite belief system when I see it.

Religion isn't the race. It's a belief system. In Islam's case it is easily the shittiest belief system of any religion on the planet that has any real numbers.

I'm not islamophobic. I fricking hate Islam and anybody who claims it as a belief system. They earn their disdain in the exact same way someone who wears a swastika earns disdain.

Let me get this straight....if you read the news about the Muslims bombing and beheading, you are more apt to be Islamaphobic? Actually, that sounds reasonable.

How about not liking them since my time in Saudi back in '92. Didn't need to read anything to come to that conclusion.

I'm thinking this would be true for almost any topic. The more one knows about a certain subject, the more emotions that are generated.

Made up bull shite

It's a religion. It can be evaluated like any other belief system.

Just because some morons created a word to try and shut down normal evaluation of their shite belief system doesn't change the fact that it is merely a system of ideas.

Systems of ideas are completely open to being evaluated and when they are complete shite, they are clearly open to being called as such.

No one has a problem being bigoted against Nazis.

Yes. I'm bigoted against Islam in exactly the same way.

The word has been around for over 90 years. Who made it up, and what was their agenda? Why not just own it? The dictionary indicates no positive or negative connotation.

At any rate, Webster and Oxford agree, so that's that. You're the thing that you said you aren't, according to the King's English.
