Someone Explain Why the US still has to protect Europe

Germany and France alone have a larger population than Russia with 4x the GDP per capita.
Europe as a whole has 15x the Russian GDP.
What's really funny is that liberals constantly bitch about military spending yet want us to defend countries more than capable of Defending themselves.
Liberals are the ones who are stuck in the past. If one proposed the defense arrangement that currently exists in NATO today people would laugh.
We're maintaining an arrangement that had reason to exist six decades ago and acting like the parameters haven't changed
ETA all while at the same time bitching and moaning about the freebies Europeans handout to their people that we would like our government to hand us. Well here's a news flash for you folks. If the defense arrangement of NATO was exactly reversed where we didn't pay jackshit for our own defense while someone else guaranteed it we would be swimming in the goodies you idiot liberals want

Because for Europe to be armed, each country would have to strengthen its own military greatly. If the last 1000 years before 1945 taught us anything, it's that several strong European national armies bunched together is not a ticket to world peace. So therefore it falls to us/NATO.
However, I agree they should be paying us more/contributing more to do it.

I agree with you.
Could do without all the insults though.

GDP is not a direct correlation to military strength, but I mostly agree. They are so scared, they spend less and less of a percentage of their GDP on their military year after year.

We need to just leave Europe to the barbarian hordes pouring in. Secure our borders and become more isolationist. We have wasted to much capital on those ungrateful SOB's already. All they seem to do is just keep making bad social, financial and immigration decisions.

Because it gives us an excuse to keep a bloated military budget that make defense contractors and security firms tons of money.

Because Isolation has proven to be so very effective for us in the past?
It didn't work a century ago and it wouldn't work now. There is merit to OP's point, and plenty of it, but isolation from Europe isn't the answer

Uh, our presence in Europe is at its lowest point since WWII.
NATO is not just about US protecting Europe. As a war strategy, we want a strong military presence in Europe. You want to fight wars on someone else's land... not your own.
US Military in Europe (as of May 2016)
Don't get too caught up in the NATO hoopla about money. The US gets a tremendous amount of benefit from being a member of NATO.

Dear god.
It's like History is no longer a subject taught in school. Either that, or the comprehension and critical thinking abilities of the masses has deteriorated into nothingness.
I blame The Nickelodeon channel.

While I agree with your premise that the U.S. should not walk away from the defense of Europe, "historically" speaking, when Europe has needed defending they have collectively ignored history... and ignored the warning signs of what is actually on the horizon...
If someone is unwilling to defend themselves, it is almost impossible for someone else to step in and defend them...

Because they wrecked their future in World War One. Six million dead soldiers.

It is the uni-party not the liberals.
We delightedly made a deal with Europe that we would buck up our military outlays to cover them too. Once the USSR collapsed, we've had to shuck and jive some. But! We created some bad guys almost out of thin air, so now there is still plenty of work for our defense contractors. So everything is fine.

Historically speaking, friends help friends. You need to put aside all the politard bullshite; the average German, French or Brit citizen is a lot like us so I don't mind helping them.

So that Europe doesnt have to fund a military to protect itself and all the liberals here in the states can idolize Europe as how great socialism can be when there's someone else there to protect you with their tax dollars instead of your own.

Some have brought up not wanting Europe to have a bunch of individually strong armies. Okay. That's fine. That's a completely separate discussion from funding armies. I don't care what hat the soldiers that do the fighting wear. Europe should be paying for their own defense. Not part of their defense. Not most of their defense. They should be paying for all of their defense
It's an absurdity to sit here in America talking about all this shite European governments do that some wish our government did while completely ignoring the reason that's possible
It's even more absurd that the ones that point to Europe the most and that bitch the most about us defense spending are the ones who lose their minds when someone talks about NATO holding up their end of the bargain
