I was shocked to see that doctors in the UK make peanuts. I figured they did, but never really looked into it. Here's the facts taken from an employment website in the UK:

quote:

Doctors in training- starting salary is £27,146. This increases in Foundation year 2 to £31,422.

General practitioners- the pay range for salaried GPs is £57,655 to £87,003.

Specialty doctors- If you’re working as a specialty doctor you’ll earn a basic salary of £39,060 to £72,84

Consultants - As a consultant you'll earn a basic salary of £77,913 to £105,042 per year, depending on the length of your service.

What in the actual frick is this? You have specialists over there making fricking peanuts. $70k a year at the high end? The average OT baller makes more than that before he wakes up in the morning.

Who in their right mind would ever be a doctor over there? Seriously. WHY? (Yes I know they have private doctors not connected with NHS).

To be fair £70,000 is like 100,000 us dollars.

Newly imported doctors from India and Pakistan who view £70,000 as a fortune.

US and Australia pay specialists a hell of a lot. The rest of the world, not so much.

Women’s mag article on UK pay

Doesn’t appear to me that the low pay is just doctors but most fields

UK salaries are much lower in general for most fields.

America pays much, much better and for that, everyone should be grateful.

Only people who make a lot (i.e. US comparable) in the UK are bankers and lawyers.

If I were a doctor in the UK, I'd be doing boob jobs and face lifts for straight cash. Nothing medically necessary. Just straight elective aesthetic procedures.

How much someone earns should be up to the market, not set by the government.

Generally speaking (for one person) I agree. Unless you’re in a high value market, say LA or NYC. Then you’re well below average.

The next step is “your weekly chocolate ration has been reduced from 32 grams to 26 grams”.

Eurocat:

“Nobody needs 32 grams of chocolate. Be thankful you’re getting any chocolate.”

Healthcare isn't a free market in the US either.

The setup in the US being quasi socialist results in highest pay for Drs and nurses etc.

In a true free market setup they'd earn far less. Think along the lines of Dental and Vets.

Either way we go, socialist or more capitalist Healthcare salaries are gonna drop.

To be fair, Doctors in the US and the UK are not comparable.

1) Salaries in the UK are lower in general. GDP per capita is like 40% lower so it's not a 1:1 comparison. You have to look at ratios between your median worker and your median doctor.

2) Doctors in the UK go through 5 or 6 years of education, some of which is heavily subsidised by the state. In the US, you pay for 8 years of education and this isn't subsidized. In the US, it's not uncommon for doctors to have $400k of debt that they have to pay off.

3) The US just pays their Doctors far more compared with most countries.
