sniper with Canada's elite special forces in Iraq has shattered the world record for the longest confirmed kill shot in military history at a staggering distance of 3,450 metres.
Sources say a member of Joint Task Force 2 killed an Islamic State insurgent with a McMillan TAC-50 sniper rifle while firing from a high-rise during an operation that took place within the last month in Iraq. It took under 10 seconds to hit the target
Holy shite.

I think the previous record holder was a Canadian sniper from the early days of the Afghan war.

Oh, well I was almost right.

I am taking this with a grain of salt. When the Canadian sniper whacked that guy at 2,200 yards, he hit the guy with his third shot after 2 near misses. Add another thousand yards and it would basically be luck. Even identifying a target would be hard, and with a 10 second time of flight - whose head is held still for 10 seconds?

Something isn't right. Bogus.

It's likely that he fired into a group of them, and hit one.

How long did it take? 3 seconds? 5? 9 seconds?

A 50 cal round takes around 4 seconds to travel that distance.

Fun fact... The bullet will reach the target a full 6 seconds before the "Sorry!"

That's a great platform, but that required a combination of:
1. Optimum ammo
2. Perfectly balanced weapon from muzzle to stock
3. Match trigger
4. Scope was doped perfectly
5. No wind (and by that I mean none)
6. Just a little luck
Now, those were the conditions. The shooter had to be nearly perfect as a well. Anything like 2 miles is like running a 3:45 mile or 2 hour marathon - at the very limits of human accomplishment at the present time.

Sure, and that is a worthy thing to do, but not a sniper shot really.
I heard once that the really good snipers fire between heartbeats. And of course you have wind, and at 3400 meters you can have winds blowing from different directions and at different speeds, you get mirage, bullet drop, the curvature of the earth (however that manifests itself) and other things.
I know just from shooting the Marine Corps KD course (known distance) with firing lines at 200, 300 and 500 yards, you can fire all week and get your dope just right. But if it is sunny on Thursday, and cloudy on Friday, your dope from Thursday will be no good. There are so many variables it is just crazy.
Sniper Scene From Generation Kill
1. The spotter in this scene is Sergeant Rudy Reyes - Played by Rudy Reyes.
2. I read a couple of years ago that one of the Marines portrayed in Generation Kill (based in 2003) was killed in a "Blue on Green" incident in Afghanistan.
