It's being reported pretty much as a athletic department issue but something seems odd to me. Consider the following.

1)The fraud was run exclusively out of the African American Studies section

2)While obviously athletes were disproportionate participants, the fact remains that more than half of the participants where non-athletes. If this were created for athletes, it would seem odd that they wouldn't be the majority.

I find it odd that there is basically zero interest in who the other 53% were that took advantage. I mean, that's more than 1600 non athlete students.

Here's a theory to chew on. This program was not created for athletes. It was created by the African American Studies section of UNC to help preserve academic standing for Affirmative Action accepted students and athletic coaches figured out the deal. I mean, given who was running this thing, it seems pretty darned likely that we can guess the racial makeup of the non athlete group of students who participated. That's why I think the media shows no interest in even addressing that aspect. Perhaps this dept simply went rogue and thought they were doing something noble or perhaps UNC itself saw the benefit in doing so.

Nah, you should read the report. It's fairly detailed as to the motives of the people who started the whole scheme.

Among the nuggets:

quote:

Both fraternity members explained that they saw these classes as somewhat of a “loophole” in Chapel Hill’s otherwise demanding curriculum, and they never conceived of these classes as being in any way tailored to athletes. In fact, they recalled that a number of their non-athlete fraternity members took so many AFAM classes that they inadvertently ended up with AFAM minors by the time they graduated.

This was created for basketball and football players and it went on for 18 Years, the reason other students started taking the course was word of mouth, how can a university deny entrance to the class without admitting the class is a sham.

I'm seriously growing weary of bigots whining about how the media doesn't talk about black on white racism enough. This shite is getting old. Can't you whine about it to your Klan buddies and leave the rest of us alone?
