Here is the letter:

didn't know we were giving him money to destroy us.

Letter is kinda vague.
What specific activities performed by the Open Society Foundation with USAID funds are there a problem with?

George soros orgs are getting US dollars to promote his open society agenda, mainly left leaning prof stuff. Letter asks tillerson to investigate to make sure us funds aren't used to push a one-sided agenda.

What's wrong with this?
Would we rather want to support closed societies?

I'm pretty sure this is one the questions the Senate would like more information.

It's spelled "Open Society" not "open society".
You know the difference, right? One is proper noun and the other is a combo of an adjective and noun. It makes a big difference.

Leaked Soros foundation docs reveal Machiavellian agenda
By Rachel Marsden
August 16, 2016
Open Society Foundations, the international political funding network founded by billionaire financier George Soros. Those claims appear valid, since the OSF reported the leak to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It seems that Soros, long a supporter of liberal candidates and causes, is an even more ambitious political manipulator than many of us had imagined. The leaked docs, along with recent tax filings, suggest that protest movements not only in urban centers across America but in other parts of the world might be less organic than would appear.
Publicly available tax filings reveal that Soros' Open Society Institute gives tens of millions of dollars to domestic activist groups in America involved in mobilizing local citizens for such protests. The Washington Times reported last year that Soros gave at least $33 million in one year to activist groups that were behind the protests that took place in Ferguson, Missouri, following the fatal 2014 shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer.

Time to cut him off and reduce his influence in our political system.

In particular, USAID funding to Soro’s Open Society Foundations in Macedonia sparked concern that the U.S. Embassy has been taking sides in the country’s fiery political fights. The group's stated goal is “to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens” but critics claim it's a front for Soros’ political maneuverings.
The USAID website shows that between 2012 and 2016, USAID gave almost $5 million in taxpayer cash to FOSM for “The Civil Society Project,” which “aims to empower Macedonian citizens to hold government accountable.” USAID’s website links to www.soros.org.mk, and says the project trained hundreds of young Macedonians “in youth activism and the use of new media instruments.”
The State Department told lawmakers that in addition to that project, USAID has recently funded a new Civic Engagement Project which partners with four organizations, including FOSM. The cost is believed to be around $9.5 million.

The first sentence in the article you linked should tip you off as to what this is really all about.
DCLeaks is widely believed to be an attribution front for a Kremlin denial and deception campaign tied to Russian hacking. There is evidence that the same people behind DCLeaks are also behind the Guccifer 2.0 attribution front. It's probably safe to assume Russia had Soros hacked in the same way they hacked American politicians that they oppose.
If this is what Soros wants to accomplish in Macedonia then am all for it. No wonder Russia hates Soros so much. Which makes the US Right's hatred of Soros very odd to say the least.

A leaked proposal for $500,000 in funding to counter Russian influence in Europe accuses Russia of supporting political parties in Europe that champion -- gasp! -- traditional values.
At least there's some self-awareness among the Soros crew, which seems to understand the hypocrisy of its campaign against Russia.
"The big challenge is what can be done a part (sic) from tracking the money and exposing Russia's meddling in internal politics of EU and its Member States," the proposal says. "Naming and shaming from us is problematic: we also are in the business of channeling money into other countries for political purposes."
If this is what Soros wants to accomplish in Macedonia then am all for it. No wonder Russia hates Soros so much. Which makes the US Right's hatred of Soros very odd to say the least.

Not only do we need to drain the swamp we need to rid it of invasive species like Soros.
Question: Does Soros resemble kudzu, zebra mussels, or giant salvinia?
