Wife is a teacher and is sick, and tested positive. School nurse sent our non-symptomatic 5 year old home because of close contact. (Child goes to mom’s school, that’s the only way nurse had knowledge.) 5 year old who is completely healthy and running around like a bantam now has to get a negative test to return on day 5 of quarantine.

So, what is the medical rationale to keep a 5 year old out of school who is perfectly healthy? I’m sure one answer is she could have it and not be symptomatic but be transmitting the virus but that goes for all the kids really. Do any Poli Talk doctors really think this is a good practice ?

Frustrated TBH.

Also, I’m sure someone will ask why my wife got tested, her para is diabetic and my wife felt it was the right thing to do and so did I.

I know that’s the most obvious answer , you agree with that?

There are probably droves there who are currently exposed to family members with the Rona and other illnesses. Just doubtful a drop in the bucket has any bearing on things

But you can't be certain. What you can be certain of is your child has been exposed. Hopefully after the 5 days she us negative. But, it burned through my house over the course of a week. I still have one kid stuck at home.

The silly part is if your wife is positive and they are going to let the kid comeback after only 5 days and a negative test.

Is the kid moving out in 5 days???

I think that the reason for this type of contact tracing/quarantine of children is because they can spread the virus before they get sick or they could have an asymptomatic case. Your point about this applying to any kid is true, but if you know about a close contact you segregate him/her from the rest of the children.

Here, the child has to test on day 5, test negative and return on day 7. If no test is taken the student must remain out of school for a full 10 days if they remain asymptomatic.

This is a pretty common response to infectious disease and has worked pretty well with past epidemics/pandemics. At this point with Covid though, it is not working and maybe making things worse. I think that we need to back away from quarantining healthy people and let it spread as it may until herd immunity is reached or until it mutates into a form that is much more deadly.

Good point but that’s what the nurse says . She was probably thinking about the student contact with positive student protocol and regurgitated that to my wife. It’s all a mess here. There are so many discrepancies.

It is the most ridiculous thing we have done since the beginning of all of this. The damage this has done to their development is immeasurable.

Thanks for explaining. Hate to see them missing school, each day is one they’ll never get back, and I don’t see any end in sight. But I’m a natural pessimist

Dude there is publication upon publication on this topic - especially with low income kids.

What about the students in your wife’s class? Are they quarantined?

Exactly why they should be in school with option to mask.

I don't support mask mandates or the zoom classes stuff, but this isn't doing irreparable harm to children.

I wasn't being contrarian. I just saw that line and thought "Exactly" It is a valid argument concerning children that is relevant in many circumstances.
