The shaming is what kids do and I have less sympathy towards feelings as the article puts it then not providing hot lunch to all.
Shame the parents instead of the kids. I think it is a rather ruthless move by the schools to snatch a lunch tray from a kid and hand them a brown paper bag knowing they are going to get made fun of. It isn't these kids fault that they have shitty parents.
They should make parents bring in their W2's at the start of every school year and base the child's lunch cost for the year based on that W2. If the parent is so shitty that they won't feed their kid then call CPS on their arse.

I know this is said sarcastically with a Cheshire grin, but this bothers me frankly. I never went without and was fortunate, but there were children in our class who couldn't afford lunch. I remember my father was an operator at DOW for years in early/mid 90s and once a month would come through and pay the overdue balances for all the kids in my class at our private school even though they'd never cut the children off.
From the 3rd to the 6th grade I basically never had a school lunch.
Why those years? because when I was in the 3rd grade bussing and forced school integration started.
For a 4 year period I had my lunch or bag lunches beat out of me daily.
I survived that hell other people can miss a lunch or 2.

Having the federal government IN ANY WAY involved in school lunches in local municipalities is asinine.

So which is it? The poor kids are more likely to be obese because of the food choices made..or the poor kids are all skinny from lack of food availability? Do they wear raggedy cloths too and are stuck with flip phones instead of smart phones??

yeah, the shaming part will continue even if all lunches become free, since the rich kids will just bring their own lunch from home and then kids will be shamed for eating the school lunch
Where the frick are kids getting "Shamed" for eating school lunch?
Since we're just making up shite, I heard that you were arrested for performing fellatio on a sick mule.

Again, this is not the "free lunch" crowd. If you read the article, it says most schools have a policy of when the lunch debt reaches $25 then they start taking the trays away... Now, I might have missed it but my kids' have been on an electronic system that sends email reminders when their account gets to a certain level, then another reminder is emailed and a letter sent home when it is 0 or overdrawn... So, if my kids get their trays taken away, it is my fault... But I have gotten PLENTY of warning that it is about to happen...

My mother teaches at public school in a pretty rough part of south Louisiana. She knew that some of her students went without a real meal after school and on most weekends.
IMO, if kids want a double helping of something that may not be "Obama healthy" or extras, make sure that they get it. Some of them don't experience real meals at home.

Yeah it's asinine alright. But when your local municipalities fail to provide for the children they're charged to educate, it becomes a big deal. These states are failures if they're allowing this.

If a parent can't pay for a reduced lunch at $2.35, I doubt their dutiful enough to prepare a lunch beforehand.
So you support removing these kids from their parents, right?

Just to be clear....none of those kids can afford food. Their parents are buying that stuff for them.
And if they miss a payment, it's their parents fault.

I support making hot lunch free to all children in schools enrolled in a state-sponsored/provided/matching funds lunch program.

In 2015, a Colorado cafeteria worker was fired for personally paying for a first grader's meal. Last year, a Pennsylvania lunch lady quit in protest after being forced to take food away from a student who was $25 in debt
Can't blame them if they want to quit. Ridiculous to tie their hands like that.
BTW....the kids in my class who showed up in dirty clothes without any lunch money were just as often the kids living with single working (and sometimes high income) dads as it was legitimately poor people.

Locals don't do it because they know someone above them will step in and take up the costs. Its just like parents that don't need a free lunch for their child taking one. And I'm not talking about school districts that provide lunches for all children.

I was illustrating the absurdity of the emotional plea that the article used

They carry over the school lunch program here through the Summer...There isn't any insentive to break the poverty cycle, or be responsible parents, so this shite will continue to spiral out of control.....

Not disagreeing with you necessarily, but what do these kids eat for lunch in the summer months and on weekends? Don't their families receive food stamps?

Georgia is certainly not a 100% free lunch state. There may be certain schools or systems that are, but not the entire state.
I know that Gwinnett County schools have the federal free and reduced lunch program, but kids who do not qualify (or have parents who would qualify but do not sign the kids up) either pay for their lunch or, at least at the elementary school level, they get a PB&J sandwich and water.

i just don't get this irrational belief that we're supposed to try and hide the fact that people are different
shaming is terrible. bullying is worse.

Here's a guy who doesn't know how easy it is to qualify for free or reduced lunch.

But their food stamps are reduced by the amount they get in free lunch. Oh wait. They're not.
