No, this is not an onion piece.

LINK /

You’re probably thinking this is a satirical report from The Onion.

We thought so, too.

But be assured it’s very real, as reported by Fox 40 Sacramento:

After a violent weekend of suspected gang-related shootings, Tuesday the Sacramento City Council took action to reduce the bloodshed.

It approved a controversial program called Advance Peace, which offers cash stipends to gang members who remain peaceful.

“Let’s get going on doing everything we can to save innocent lives,” Steinberg said.

The program targets key gang agitators, offering them cash stipends to graduate school and remain peaceful. It already claims success in dropping crime rates in Richmond. But the city would still have to pay half the cost of the program, $1.5 million out of the city’s general fund.

In the end, the council agreed to the program, voting 9-0 in favor.

Because policies of appeasement have worked so very well throughout history, why not give it another try?

Take money from peaceful tax paying citizens and redistribute that money to the gang bangers who are killing them.

Sounds like a brilliant idea that could only manifest itself on the progressively tolerant left coast.

Maybe we should kick this up to the Federal level and see if we can get taxpayer funds to send to the Islamic State and North Korea… that should work like a charm.

It's times like this that I'm glad that our country is built to have a bottom-up approach.

Let some local municipality experiment with their own money however they wish. When we see it fail, we'll be that much less tempted to repeat their mistake on a national level.

It started last year in California.

A gang member receives $1,300 a month not to kill.

(But since most gang violence goes unsolved) I don't know how they can validate the non-kill provision.

I guess if you get arrested, convicted and sent to Prison...only then do you lose your stipend.

It won't.

If they're willing to rob someone for $300 and you just give them $300, they're still willing to rob someone. Because then they'll have $600.

I saw something on TV the other day where the guy that invented IQ tests wanted to use them to determine who should be sterilized. His idea seems like a better use of resources than what Sacramento is doing.

It's ridiculous all around but even in this craziness, why wouldn't they pay for people to quit gangs instead of just stopping the gang violence? Seems to me that they are wanting to pay alcoholics not to drink while at a bar.

Why just gang members? Shouldn't anyone in the greater sacramento area who hasn't murdered in 30 days be eligible for the same stipend?

People respond to incentives. You've just accurately portrayed what the policy actually incentivizes vs what the people implementing think it incentivizes.

Was it Sacramento that thought giving lodging and an income to homeless people would solve their transient population problem? Of course, they were flooded by homeless from other cities who wanted to be taken care of, too, so they abandoned the program

Yeah, paying criminals not to commit crimes will work as well. They should pay people not to have children. Now that would benefit society.

Once a gang member signs an affidavit stating they will agree not to kill anyone and remain peaceful in exchange for X amount of money then they should immediately be arrested for extortion.

You haven't even killed anybody yet. You don't deserve it.
